Facebook ads not working: start by finding where they stall

When Facebook ads are not working, the first instinct is to rewrite the copy or raise the budget. Find the stage where things stop first. Every ad moves through the same steps: it is shown, clicked, the page is read, and someone buys or inquires. Line up these numbers in Ads Manager to see the bottleneck.

  • Impressions and CPM: is the ad being delivered at all? A very high CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) often points to an audience that is too narrow or a crowded season
  • Link click-through rate: if people see the ad and scroll past, the image or video and the first line are not landing
  • Landing page views: far fewer than link clicks means a slow page or broken tracking
  • Conversion rate: visitors arrive but do not act – look for a gap between the ad and the page, or a form that is hard to use
  • Frequency: if frequency climbs while click-through falls, the audience is tired of the creative

Look at at least one week of data, at campaign and ad set level. Judging by a few days usually means switching ads off before delivery settles.

Five common reasons Meta ads underperform

Weak results rarely have a single cause. Here are the usual suspects, easiest to check first.

  • Stuck in the learning phase: delivery stabilizes as each ad set collects optimization events such as purchases or leads – usually around 50 in seven days. Small budgets, too many ad sets and frequent edits keep it in learning
  • Creatives that miss or have worn out: in a mobile feed, the first second or two decide whether anyone stops. A plain product shot, or one asset running for months, fades fast
  • An audience that is too narrow: stacking age, location and interest filters shrinks the pool and drives up costs. Meta's current delivery generally works better with broader targeting and good conversion data
  • Tracking that is off: duplicated pixel events or a purchase event that never fires send the optimization in the wrong direction
  • An ad and a page that do not match: the offer from the ad is missing above the fold, the page is hard to read on a phone, or the form asks too much

Our guide to Meta Pixel and Conversions API setup shows how to check tracking. Since iOS privacy changes a pixel alone misses some conversions, so consider adding the Conversions API.

How to analyze Facebook ads step by step

Analysis is faster when you follow a fixed order and confirm one thing at a time.

  • Check the objective and the conversion event: is the campaign set to Sales or Leads, and is it optimizing for the result you actually want?
  • Test the tracking: use Test Events in Events Manager to confirm a page view, a form submission and a purchase each record exactly once
  • Break down by placement: compare Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network and age groups to see where results come from
  • Compare ads: within one ad set, put click-through rate and cost per result side by side and look for what the winners share
  • Cross-check with GA4: see how far ad visitors read and where they leave the page

Meta and GA4 count conversions differently (attribution), so their numbers rarely match. Compare week against week in the same report and date range.

Meta ad rejected? What to check in the advertising standards

If an ad never starts or stops mid-flight, check its review status. Most reviews finish within 24 hours, but anything that breaks Meta's Advertising Standards is marked as rejected and will not run. These are the most common triggers:

  • Personal attributes: copy that implies something about the viewer, such as their health, body or finances ("Struggling with your weight?")
  • Before-and-after images: comparison photos that highlight body changes in diet or beauty ads
  • Guaranteed results: claims like "lose weight for sure" or "anyone can earn"
  • A mismatch with the page: the price or offer in the ad is missing on the landing page, or the page does not load
  • Restricted products: alcohol, supplements and financial services may be allowed only under conditions or after approval

Japanese law applies too: the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act for cosmetics and health claims, the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations for exaggerated prices or effects, and the medical advertising guidelines for clinics. To dispute a rejection, request another review from Account Quality. Policies change, so check the latest official pages before launch.

How to get Facebook ads back on track

Once you know the likely cause, fix one thing at a time, biggest impact first:

  • Fix tracking first: until results are counted correctly, you cannot judge any other change
  • Improve the landing page: match the first screen to the ad's message and make sure it loads quickly on a phone
  • Consolidate ad sets: merge ad sets with similar audiences so each collects enough events to exit learning
  • Prepare three to five creatives: vary the angle – price, use case, product detail, season – and compare responses
  • Leave it alone for one to two weeks: big budget jumps and frequent edits restart learning, so batch your changes

If Instagram is your main placement, see how effective Instagram ads are. If nobody in-house has time to run the account, Meta ads management is another option.

FAQ

What does the free demo include?

A working landing page built from your current ads and brand – the page people see right after they click. You can check it on mobile too, and you get notes on what to review in tracking and account structure.

Is there any cost if I decide not to continue?

No. The demo is free and you decide after seeing it. If you want to go ahead, you receive a plan and an estimate after the demo.

Do I need to give you access to my ad account?

Not for the demo. Your landing page URL and screenshots or a short description of your ads are enough. If you later hand over management, you add us as a partner in your business portfolio and keep ownership of the account.

How long until results improve?

Delivery usually needs one to two weeks to settle after changes. Results depend on product, budget and competition, so no figures can be promised. We start with tracking so every change can be measured.

Can you help with rejected ads?

Yes. We look at the rejection reason and the ad itself, then suggest compliant wording and page changes. Approval is decided by Meta's review, and we also show you how to request another review.

Does working remotely by message really work?

Yes. Everything runs by message in Japanese or English, with replies within two business days, and admin panel tasks come with clear written steps.
