STORES online shop setup – see your finished shop as a free demo first

STORES lets you open an online shop in Japan without upfront costs, and it connects neatly with in-store POS and booking tools. The catch: straight out of the template, many shops look alike, and as your range and sales channels grow you start to hit limits. This page covers how to build and customize a STORES shop, where people usually get stuck and when it pays to move to Shopify – plus how UNANOBO shows you the finished shop as a free demo before you decide.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

Who a STORES online shop suits best

STORES keeps things simple: products, payments and shipping are all managed from one clean admin panel. There is a free plan and a paid monthly plan, and the plan you choose changes the transaction fees and features. Pricing is revised from time to time, so check the official site for current terms. STORES works especially well for:

  • Shops with a physical store that want to combine STORES POS or booking with online sales and manage stock and customers in one place
  • A range of a few dozen items – homeware, baked goods, coffee beans, apparel – where photos and good copy do the selling
  • Owners who update the shop themselves and want to add products or news from a phone
  • Brands starting small that want low fixed costs while they test demand

BASE is the other easy-start service people usually compare. See how to build a BASE online shop for that route.

Decisions to make before you build on STORES

You can publish a STORES shop in a few hours, which makes it tempting to skip the groundwork – and that is what leads to rebuilding later. Write down these points first:

  • Who buys and why: gifts or personal use, first-time or repeat customers – this decides which products and words lead the home page
  • How products are grouped: categories, variants such as color and size, and how bundles work
  • Shipping: how fees are calculated, the free-shipping threshold, gift wrapping or noshi, and dispatch times
  • Key photos: a main visual for the home page and a consistent standard for product shots (background, lighting, number of images)
  • Your own domain: if you might change platforms one day, start on a domain registered in your name

Before launch you also need the legal notice required under the Act on Specified Commercial Transactions, a privacy policy and clear return terms. The required items depend on your business, so check the Consumer Affairs Agency's current guidance.

How to set up a STORES online shop, step by step

With materials ready, a small shop typically takes a few days to two weeks. This order works well:

  • Account and plan: start on the free plan and upgrade when sales or features call for it
  • Shop basics: name, logo, contact details, legal notice, shipping and fees
  • Payments: apply for card, convenience-store and other payment methods, then wait for approval
  • Design: choose a template and set colors, fonts, the main visual and menu order
  • Products: names, descriptions, photos, prices, stock, variants and categories
  • Pre-launch checks: mobile layout, the order flow through to the confirmation email, and shipping fees – check them with a test order

Payment approval can take several days, so apply before you start on design. For product descriptions, start with what customers would ask in a store: size, material, how to use it, how long delivery takes. Answering those up front removes most hesitation before checkout.

What the free demo gives you

  • 01A working demoA demo site you can open and click through on a computer and a phone.
  • 02A structure proposalWhich pages you need, what goes on each and where visitors get in touch.
  • 03Plan and estimateAfter you have seen the demo you get the plan to launch and an estimate.

Why it is safe to ask

  • The demo is free. If you decide not to go ahead, it costs you nothing.
  • Everything happens by message, in Japanese or English.
  • Your domain, hosting, ad and analytics accounts stay in your name.
  • The founder handles your project from the first demo to growth after launch – one contact all the way.

Demo sites we built

Template demos with fictional brands. Yours is built with your own brand and content.

Customizing STORES: from template to a shop that feels like yours

STORES design is template-based, so the range of changes is more defined than on platforms where you can edit the code freely. Within that range, these areas make the biggest difference:

  • Main visual and logo: match brand colors and photo tone so the first screen says exactly what you sell
  • Home page order: arrange featured products, categories, your story and news around the items you most want to sell
  • Consistent product photos: the same background and ratio instantly make listing pages look polished
  • Brand story: a page about the maker, the craft and where materials come from
  • Add-ons: coupons, subscriptions, reviews – add only what you will actually use

If you want a presentation that goes beyond the template, you can run a separate brand site and keep checkout on STORES. How far STORES can carry your look depends on your products and the feel you want, so comparing real screens is the surest test.

When moving from STORES to Shopify pays off

Once a STORES shop is selling steadily, its flexibility can start to feel tight. These are the usual signals that Shopify is worth considering:

  • Templates cannot express your brand or the page structure you need
  • You want to sell abroad with multiple languages and currencies
  • You need wholesale pricing, member tiers, pre-orders or other non-standard sales models
  • You want to connect inventory, shipping or accounting tools and cut manual work
  • You are scaling ads and analytics and need fine control over tracking and tags

A move needs a plan for exporting and importing product data, redirecting URLs and telling customers. Our e-commerce platform comparison covers the differences, and e-commerce site migration walks through the steps. If STORES still covers what you need, staying is a perfectly good choice.

How UNANOBO builds STORES shops: a free demo first

Before you commit to anything, UNANOBO builds a free demo of your shop based on your brand and products. You check the home page and product pages on your computer and phone, and decide whether to go ahead once you like the direction. The demo is also the easiest way to decide whether STORES is enough or whether to start on Shopify.

The process is simple: free demo, feedback, launch, growth. The founder handles every project personally, so you keep one contact from the first demo to marketing after launch. Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English, and your shop account and domain stay in your name.

FAQ

What does the free demo include?

A shop design centered on the home page and product pages, built from your logo, colors and product photos. You can view it on mobile too. You decide whether to continue after seeing it.

Is there any cost if I decide not to go ahead?

No. The demo is free, and you are free to stop after seeing it. If you continue, you get a proposed scope, plan and estimate based on the demo.

I already run a STORES shop. Can you still help?

Yes. Send us your shop URL and we will show you a free demo with a refined design, home page layout and product page presentation. We can also look at whether to stay on STORES or move to Shopify, based on how your shop is doing.

What do I need to prepare?

Your logo files, product photos and a list of product names and prices are enough to start the demo. Your shipping and payment preferences and two or three shops you like help us make it more specific. If photos are not ready, we can settle the layout with placeholder images first.

How long does it take to launch?

It depends on the number of products and how ready your materials are, but a small shop typically takes a few weeks after your feedback on the demo. Payment approval can take several days, so we will ask you to apply early.

You are not based in Japan. Is working remotely a problem?

Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English. We share screenshots and demo links as we go, so reviewing work from a distance is easy. You get a reply within two business days.
