SEO vs Google Ads – choosing by budget and timeline
The core difference between SEO and Google Ads is how you pay. With ads you pay to appear in search results today; with SEO you invest time and work to build search traffic that keeps coming. Which one fits depends on your budget, how soon you need results and what you sell. This page compares the two on cost, timeline and fit, explains when to start with which, and shows how to combine them.

SEO vs Google Ads: how each works and what it costs
Here "ads" means Google search ads, the paid listings that appear when someone searches. SEO is the work of making your site rank in the regular, unpaid results. Both show up on the same results page, yet they spend money and time in very different ways.
- Placement: ads appear at the top or bottom of the results with a "Sponsored" label; SEO results appear in the regular listings
- Cost: ads charge per click and disappear when the budget stops; SEO has no click fees – the cost is content and site work
- Time to results: ads can run within days of approval; SEO typically needs three to six months or more
- Control: with ads you set keywords, locations, hours and daily budget; with SEO, the search engine decides rankings
- What remains: ads leave you data on which searches bring inquiries; SEO leaves you pages that search engines already trust
A simple way to think about it: ads bring this month's inquiries, SEO grows the inquiries of the next six to twelve months. Start by writing down how many leads you need and by when.
When to start with ads, and when to start with SEO
Two questions decide it: when do you need results, and how much can you spend on marketing each month? Start with whichever side has more ticks below.
- Ads first: you have just opened or launched a product and need inquiries now
- Ads first: you sell something seasonal or time-limited
- Ads first: people search for you in a hurry – car repairs, plumbing, urgent services
- SEO first: buyers compare for weeks, as with renovation or B2B services
- SEO first: your field has many research searches such as "what is…" or "how to choose…"
- SEO first: clicks in your industry are expensive and paying for them indefinitely is a strain
Cost per click varies widely by industry and region; legal, medical and real estate keywords tend to be expensive. See search ads management for what an ads service covers, and SEO services for what SEO work involves.
Seeing the landing page first makes the choice much easier. Send us your current site address to start.
Why SEO and ads work well together
If the budget allows, running both lets each cover the other's weak spot: ads bring results quickly while SEO builds pages that attract visitors for years.
- Bridge the early months: ads keep inquiries coming while SEO takes effect
- Feed ad data into SEO: the search terms report shows which words actually bring inquiries – turn them into service pages and articles
- Rebalance as SEO ranks: for keywords where you rank steadily, adjust bids and move budget to words where you are not visible yet
- Add MEO for local businesses: a complete Google Business Profile brings calls and visits from Maps
A common pattern is to start with more weight on ads and shift budget toward SEO as organic results grow. Review the split every three months against real numbers.

Where to start, by budget and timeline
Here is a first step for four typical situations. Amounts depend heavily on your business, so pick the case closest to yours.
- Small budget, no rush: start with SEO and MEO – strong service pages, FAQs and a complete Google Business Profile
- Small budget, need results soon: a small search campaign with tight keywords and locations, with ad copy that matches the landing page
- Larger budget, need results soon: search ads at the core, Google Shopping for online stores, Meta Ads for awareness, and SEO started in parallel
- Larger budget, long-term growth: a steady SEO content plan, with a small ads budget kept for testing new keywords
In every case, results depend on the page people land on and on tracking. Traffic from ads or search will not turn into inquiries if the page is unclear, so set up GA4 and conversion tracking before you start. For realistic expectations, read how long SEO takes to work.

Common mistakes with SEO and ads
Most disappointing results trace back to how things were set up. Check these before you start.
- Running ads without tracking, so nobody knows which ads bring inquiries
- Sending every ad to the home page, so visitors have to hunt for the answer they searched for
- Never reviewing keywords, so budget keeps flowing to unrelated searches
- Judging SEO after one or two months and stopping before it can work
- Hiring someone who guarantees rankings and ends up with low-quality links
- Letting an agency open the ad account in its own name, so the data is lost when you part ways
Keep your ad accounts, GA4 and Search Console in your own name. Whoever runs them, your campaign and search history stays with you.

FAQ
Can I hire you for only SEO or only ads?
Yes. Either one works on its own, and sometimes starting with ads and adding SEO later is the best fit. We suggest the right mix in the plan that follows the demo.
Who do I pay the ad spend to?
You pay Google or Meta directly from an ad account in your own name. Management fees are kept separate, so you always see exactly what went into ads. The account and its data stay yours.
How long does SEO take to show results?
Typically you start to see changes three to six months after the pages are improved. It depends a lot on competition and the state of your site, and search engines decide rankings, so no specific position or date can be promised. We review Search Console data together as we go.
Is the demo really free, and what if I don't go ahead?
The demo is free. If you decide not to continue after seeing it, there is no cost at all. You only consider the plan and estimate if you like the direction.
What should I prepare?
Your current site address, what you sell, the area you serve and a rough monthly marketing budget are enough. If you already run ads, tell us which platforms and roughly how much you spend. No website yet? A description of your business is enough to build a demo.
Can we work only by message if I am not in Japan?
Yes. UNANOBO works remotely, and everything from the first questions to post-launch improvements happens by message, in Japanese or English. You get a reply within two business days, and the written record is easy to share with colleagues.
