Migrate your Jimdo site – to WordPress or STUDIO, with content and URLs intact

Jimdo is a quick way to get a website online, but many businesses eventually outgrow its design limits and marketing tools. Moving away takes some planning, because Jimdo has no export feature that hands your site to another platform. This guide walks through when to migrate, how to choose between WordPress and STUDIO, how to carry over content and URLs, and what to check about your domain.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

Why businesses migrate a Jimdo site

Jimdo is easy to start with. As a business grows, a few limits tend to come up again and again:

  • Design freedom: layouts stay close to the template, and fine-tuning to your brand is hard
  • SEO and tracking: per-page settings, structured data and custom tags are limited
  • Features: bookings, memberships, multiple languages or serious online sales are hard to add
  • Free plan limits: ads and a subdomain address can weaken trust in your business
  • No export: there is no standard way to move text and images to another CMS in one go

Some people search for news that Jimdo is shutting down. Always check Jimdo's official announcements for the current status of the service and its plans. It also helps to write down which of the limits above actually affect you – that list makes choosing the next platform much easier.

WordPress or STUDIO: choosing where to move

The two most common destinations for a Jimdo site in Japan are WordPress and STUDIO. Both work well; the right one depends on who updates the site and what you want it to do.

  • WordPress: best if you publish lots of articles or news, want strong SEO control or plan to add features later. Needs hosting and regular theme and plugin updates
  • STUDIO: best if you want a polished design without managing a server. A good fit for company profiles and service sites with a moderate number of pages
  • Shopify or BASE: the natural step if you are moving from Jimdo's shop feature to real e-commerce

For the WordPress route in more detail, see migrating to WordPress. Moving from a similar builder follows much the same logic – our page on Wix migration is a useful comparison. If you are unsure, let update frequency and the comfort of whoever edits the site decide.

Six steps to move your content

Because Jimdo cannot export your site, a careful inventory up front decides how clean the result is. Work through these steps in order:

  • List every page: include blog posts and pages that are not in the menu, with their URLs
  • Save your materials: copy the text and gather the original image and PDF files, or save them from the site
  • Decide what stays: keep the most visited pages and those that bring inquiries; retire outdated content
  • Plan the new structure: set pages and URLs on the new platform and map each old URL to a new one
  • Build and test: finish the design, then check forms, mobile view, speed and tracking tags
  • Switch over: point the domain to the new site and check redirects and pages right after launch

Blog-heavy sites take the most copying. Check traffic per post and move the most-read articles first, so effort goes where it matters.

Redirects and your domain: protecting search traffic

How you handle URLs and the domain makes the biggest difference in a migration. Get this right and search traffic, bookmarks and links on business cards keep working.

  • If you use your own domain: set 301 redirects from old URLs to new ones on the new platform – server rules or a plugin on WordPress, the redirect settings in STUDIO (check which plans include it)
  • If the domain was registered through Jimdo: check the transfer procedure and how to get the authorization code for your plan before you start
  • If you use Jimdo email: moving the domain can stop your mail, so set up the new email service first
  • If you are on a free-plan subdomain: redirects from the old address are not possible, so leave a "we have moved" notice with a link to the new site for a while

After launch, submit a sitemap in Search Console and watch for errors or pages that drop out. Our guide to SEO and 301 redirects in a site migration explains how to set up and verify redirects.

Common Jimdo migration mistakes

Most problems in a Jimdo move can be prevented before the work starts. Use this as a checklist:

  • Cancelling the Jimdo plan too early and losing access to text and images
  • Moving low-resolution images that look blurry in the new design
  • Skipping the URL map, so bookmarks and search results lead to missing pages
  • Not testing where the contact form sends messages, so inquiries go missing after launch
  • Forgetting GA4 and tags, so before and after cannot be compared

Cancel Jimdo only after the new site is live and redirects are confirmed. If your renewal date is close, plan the start of the migration backwards from it.

FAQ

Is the demo really free?

Yes. We build a working new design, centered on the home page, from your current Jimdo content, logo and colors at no cost. If you decide not to continue after seeing it, you pay nothing.

Can my Jimdo text and images be moved as they are?

Jimdo has no bulk export, so text is moved and tidied page by page, and images come from your original files or are saved from the site. With original files, images look sharp in the new design. We agree together on what to move, starting with your most visited pages.

How long does a migration take?

Typically one to two months for a small site, longer for sites with many blog posts. It also depends on how quickly materials and feedback come in. After the demo you get a concrete plan based on your page count.

Will my Jimdo site stay online during the move?

Yes. The new site is built and reviewed separately, and the domain is switched only when it is ready, so visitors see your current site the whole time. You can cancel Jimdo once the switch and redirects are confirmed.

What do I need to prepare?

Your Jimdo site address, original logo and photo files if you have them, and your domain details are enough to start. Jimdo login access is only discussed when the actual work begins. Any missing materials are listed for you early on.

Is working remotely by message difficult?

Not in practice. Everything runs by message in Japanese or English, and replies come within two business days. You review the demo through a link, so there is no need for meetings or office visits.
