Affordable website design in Japan – check what you get with a free demo
When you want a website on a tight budget, the real question is whether a low price can still give you a site you are proud to share. A cheap quote can turn expensive once update fees, monthly charges and cancellation terms are added up. This page walks through the low-cost options in Japan, the costs that usually come later, and a checklist for quotes – plus how UNANOBO keeps prices down as a lean remote studio and lets you see a free demo first.

Your options for an affordable website in Japan
"Cheap website" covers several very different models. The price mostly reflects who does the work and how much of the design is made for you. The ranges below are typical market figures, for orientation only.
- DIY builders such as Wix, Jimdo or Peraichi: free to a few thousand yen a month, but you write, shoot and structure everything yourself
- Template packages: your text and photos dropped into a ready-made design, often from tens of thousands of yen up to around 300,000 yen, with limited flexibility
- Monthly subscription plans: low or no setup fee, then a few thousand to tens of thousands of yen a month; the total depends on the contract length
- Freelancers and small studios: lower overhead, so the same work can cost less; quality depends heavily on the person
- Agencies with custom design: typically 300,000 yen to over a million, with a director, designer and developer sharing the work
For a breakdown of what drives the price, see website cost in Japan. A good first step is to write down how much time you can put in yourself and what you want to hand over.
The hidden costs of cheap website plans
Low-cost plans usually stay cheap in one of two ways: they narrow the scope, or they recover the cost after launch. If you compare only the headline price, these items tend to appear later:
- Per-edit fees: every text or photo change is billed separately
- Extra pages: the plan includes, say, five pages, and each additional one costs more
- Minimum terms and exit fees: two- to five-year contracts where leaving early means paying the remaining months
- Lease contracts: several years of payments locked in, with no way out even if the site disappoints
- Domain ownership: the domain is registered in the provider's name, so you cannot take it with you
- Locked data: the site runs on a proprietary system and cannot be exported when you cancel
- Content work: "customer provides all text and photos" leaves the hardest part with you
Subscription terms deserve a careful read – see website subscription plans for what to look for. When comparing quotes, add the setup fee, three years of monthly fees and expected edit costs, and compare that three-year total.

A checklist before you sign a cheap website contract
A budget website can be a perfectly sound choice for your size and goals, as long as the terms are clear. Ask these questions at the quote stage:
- Can the domain, hosting and Google Analytics accounts be in your own name?
- Are mobile layout, SSL (https) and a contact form included in the price?
- Can you edit text and photos yourself, and will someone show you how?
- What is the minimum term, the exit fee, and what happens to the site and data if you leave?
- How much do extra pages or changes cost, and how quickly are they done?
- Are basic search settings, such as page titles and descriptions, included?
- Can you review the design before launch, and how many rounds of changes are included?
Sending this list with your quote request makes the differences between providers obvious. If many answers come back vague, take your time before signing.

How to keep the cost down without cutting quality
The surest way to a low price and a trustworthy result is a tight first scope. Start small, watch how people respond, and grow the site from there.
- Fewer pages: home, services, about or shop info, and contact – around four pages. For some businesses a single well-built page is enough
- Draft your own copy: bullet points on services, price guidance and common questions save a lot of production time
- Take your own photos: phone photos of your shop or products, shot in good daylight, work well
- Pick a common platform: WordPress, Shopify or BASE let you update the site yourself and keep running it even if you change providers
- Add features later: booking, multiple languages or online sales can follow once you see what customers need
If you run your business on your own, websites for sole proprietors covers this approach in more detail. The leaner the first launch, the more budget is left for marketing and improvements.
Around the free demo, we sort out which pages you need now and which features can wait.

FAQ
Is the demo really free?
Yes. We build a working demo, centered on the home page, around your brand and type of business at no cost. After you have seen it, you receive a plan and an estimate.
What if I decide not to go ahead?
That is fine. Stopping at the demo stage costs nothing. You are also welcome to use the demo to compare with other providers.
Why are there no published prices?
The work varies a lot with the number of pages, how often you update and whether you sell online. We agree the scope with you around the demo, then send an estimate that lists the work clearly, including the items that most often add cost later.
How long does it take?
A small site of a few pages typically takes a few weeks to a month once materials are ready. We reply to messages within two business days. The further along your copy and photos are, the sooner the site can launch.
What do I need to prepare?
Your logo, a bullet list of your services and any photos you want to use are enough to start. Send your current site or social media links if you have them. Anything missing is listed for you during the demo stage.
Can we do everything by message, without meeting?
Yes. Briefing, reviews and support after launch all happen by message, in Japanese or English. You get a link to the demo and can review it on your phone or computer whenever it suits you.
