Reduce CPA in Google Ads – set the target from your margins, then lower it
You are spending on ads, yet each inquiry or sale costs so much that little profit is left. Reducing CPA starts with seeing where the money actually goes. This page explains what CPA is, how to set a target you can live with, and the practical steps to lower it in Google Ads – targeting, bidding, ad copy and the landing page, in that order.
- Free demo – decide after you see it
- By message, in Japanese or English
- One person from demo to launch

What CPA is, and signs you need to reduce it
CPA (cost per acquisition) is the ad spend behind one result: ad spend divided by conversions. Spend ¥100,000 in a month, get 20 inquiries, and your CPA is ¥5,000. What counts as a result depends on the business – a purchase for an online shop, a booking for a salon or clinic, an inquiry or download for B2B.
CPA also equals cost per click divided by conversion rate. That gives you exactly two levers: pay less per click, or turn more visitors into customers. Finding out which lever is weaker is the first step.
- Ad spend keeps rising while inquiries and sales stay flat
- Conversions in Google Ads do not match the orders or bookings you actually receive
- You cannot say which keywords or ads bring the results
- Clicks come in, but few people reach the form or checkout
- Budgets get adjusted by feel, with no target CPA written down
If any of these sound familiar, put the last three months of spend, conversions and CPA side by side. The month-by-month trend alone usually shows where to start.
Set your target CPA from your margins
The most common question is "what CPA is acceptable?" Your own margins hold the answer. Start with the gross profit one conversion brings in – that is your break-even CPA.
- Online sales: average order value × gross margin. An ¥8,000 order at 50% margin means ¥4,000 is the most you can pay without losing money
- Lead generation: average deal value × gross margin × close rate. A ¥300,000 deal at 40% margin with a 20% close rate allows up to ¥24,000 per inquiry
- Repeat businesses: multiply first-order profit by average visits or months as a customer to get lifetime gross profit
Subtract the profit you want to keep and you have your target CPA. With a ¥4,000 break-even and ¥1,500 of profit to keep, the target is ¥2,500. If you judge performance by revenue across many products, combine this with ROAS improvement to make product-level calls.

Check conversion tracking first
If the CPA number itself is wrong, every fix aims at the wrong thing. Before trying to reduce CPA in Google Ads, confirm that tracking reflects reality.
- Double counting: thank-you page reloads, or conversions imported from both Google Ads and GA4, turning one lead into two
- Definition: light actions such as page views or a tap on the phone button set as primary conversions
- Gaps: form submissions, calls, LINE adds and booking systems – every real route to a result should be tracked
- Settings: where the Google tag fires, the conversion window and the counting method
Compare one month of conversions in the account with the inquiries and orders you actually received, and gaps show up quickly. For a full review of the setup, see our Google Ads account audit guide.

Lower Google Ads CPA through targeting and bidding
With clean data, the next step is cutting wasted clicks and click costs. Who sees your ads, when, and at what bid moves CPA more than anything else in the account.
- Search terms report: review what people actually typed and add the irrelevant terms as negative keywords
- Focused keywords: shift budget to high-intent terms such as price, booking or your area name
- Location, schedule, device: lower bids or pause delivery where hours or areas never convert
- Bid strategy: move to Target CPA once you have a steady flow of conversions, and change the target in small steps
- Campaign structure: if products have different target CPAs, give them separate campaigns with their own budgets and targets
After a bid strategy change, numbers swing while automated bidding learns. Make one change every week or two and log it, so you always know what caused what.

Raise conversion rate with ad copy and the landing page
Click costs can only fall so far, while conversion rate often has plenty of room. Lift it from 2% to 3% and the same budget brings CPA down by about a third.
- Message match: the price, offer or area in the ad appears again on the first screen of the page
- First screen: who it is for, what it is and what to do next are clear without scrolling
- Reassurance: price guide, steps, FAQs and business details answer questions before they stop a sign-up
- Form: only the fields you need, easy to fill in on a phone, with a note on what happens after sending
- Speed: the page loads within a few seconds on mobile data, with images sized properly
Run several ad variations and keep the ones that convert. For page-side fixes in the right order, see landing page optimization.

FAQ
What does the free demo include?
A working landing page built from your current ad destination and product or service details, structured to convert. You can check it on mobile too. It costs nothing, and you decide after seeing it.
What if I decide not to go ahead?
That is fine. The demo is free and comes with no obligation. Feel free to use anything you learned from it in your own campaigns.
Can you work in my existing Google Ads account?
Yes. You grant access to your own account, which stays in your name. There is usually no need to start a new account, so your past performance data keeps working for you.
How much will my CPA drop?
CPA depends on competition, your product and the season, so no specific figure can be promised. What you get is a target CPA built from your margins and a clear, reasoned view of where tracking, targeting or the page can improve.
What should I prepare?
Your ad landing page URL, the last few months of spend and conversions, and a rough idea of prices and margins. If the numbers are not organized yet, we can start by going through the account together.
Is working remotely by message practical?
Yes. Everything runs by message in Japanese or English, and questions get a reply within two business days. You never need to set aside time for calls or office visits.
