Google Ads management for small budgets – focus every yen where it counts

You can run Google Ads on a small budget, but the smaller the budget, the more the targeting and the page people land on decide the result. This page covers what a modest monthly spend can realistically deliver, how to concentrate it, and which settings to check before you launch. It also explains why UNANOBO, which takes on small accounts, starts by building a free demo of the page your ads will send people to.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

What a small Google Ads budget can realistically do

Google Ads has no minimum spend and charges only when someone clicks, so a sole proprietor or a single shop can start with a few hundred yen a day.

You can estimate results from cost per click and conversion rate. With a budget of 30,000 yen a month and clicks at around 150 yen, you get roughly 200 clicks. At a typical inquiry rate of 1–3%, that means about two to six inquiries a month. Click prices range from tens of yen to over 1,000 yen depending on industry and area, so run the numbers on your own keywords.

  • Works well on a small budget: local businesses searched with an area name, branded searches, niche specialist services, short seasonal pushes
  • Hard on a small budget: competitive nationwide keywords, generic terms in high-CPC industries, brand awareness goals

The aim of a small account is to send its limited clicks to people who are ready to act now. Check which group your business falls into and set your scope accordingly.

Why small budgets disappear without results

In a small account, one missed setting can eat most of the spend. When money goes out and no inquiries come in, the cause is usually one of these:

  • A search campaign is also showing on the Display Network or search partners
  • Broad match keywords drift into loosely related searches
  • Location targeting is left on "presence or interest", so ads show outside your area
  • Too many keywords and ad groups, so none collects enough data
  • Automated bidding runs without conversion tracking
  • Ads link to the home page, where the answer to the search is hard to find

All of these can be caught before launch. If your ads are already running, open the search terms report first and see whether money is going to searches you never meant to target.

Five ways to concentrate a small budget

With a small account, efficiency comes from showing ads only in moments close to a conversion. These are the five levers:

  • Keywords: stick to terms used right before action, such as area plus service, "booking" or "price". Lean on phrase and exact match, and add negative keywords from day one
  • Location: only the area you can actually serve, targeted by presence
  • Days and hours: match the times you can answer calls or bookings; outside those hours, point people to a form or online booking
  • Service: start with one profitable service or signature product
  • Structure: one campaign and a few ad groups, so data builds up in one place

If impressions are too low, add keywords gradually. Every one or two weeks, compare search terms with inquiries and pause the terms that do not convert – that is the core routine.

What the free demo gives you

Setup checklist before you start with a small budget

Whether you are an individual or a small company, checking these points before launch protects your first month of spend. For the full process from creating an account, see how to start with Google Ads.

  • Campaign type is Search, with the Display Network unticked
  • Location option is set to presence
  • Phone taps, form submissions or completed bookings are tracked as conversions
  • Bidding starts with a capped cost per click until data builds up
  • Ad text includes your area, a specific service, and a price guide or clear benefit
  • The landing page matches the ad and makes contacting you easy on a phone
  • The ad account and GA4 are created in your own name

Once conversions come in steadily each month, you can test automated bidding such as Maximize conversions. While data is thin, simpler settings make it easier to see where the money goes.

Choosing an agency that takes small accounts – and where Instagram ads fit

Some agencies in Japan set a minimum ad spend of several hundred thousand yen a month. Management fees are typically around 20% of ad spend, and small accounts often face a separate minimum fee that makes the service expensive relative to the budget. Our pages on ad management fees and search ad costs explain the pricing models in detail.

  • Do they accept small accounts, and what is the minimum fee?
  • Is the ad account yours, with data still available if you leave?
  • Who actually runs the account, and how often will you hear from them?
  • Can they also help improve the page your ads land on?

Instagram ads can also run on small amounts and suit products that sell visually, such as food, beauty or lifestyle goods. To reach people who are searching right now, set up search ads first. On a tight budget, build a working inquiry flow with search, then add Instagram once there is room.

How UNANOBO runs small accounts: a free demo of your landing page first

UNANOBO takes on small accounts with budgets of a few tens of thousands of yen a month. Since the page after the click decides most of the result, we start by building a free demo of the page your ads will point to, designed around your brand. You check it on your computer and phone and decide whether to go ahead once you like it.

The process is free demo, feedback, launch, growth. The founder handles the page, the ad setup and ongoing adjustments personally, so you keep one contact throughout. Ad and analytics accounts stay in your name, and everything runs by message in Japanese or English.

FAQ

What is the smallest budget you work with?

Ad spend of a few tens of thousands of yen a month is fine. The key question is whether it buys enough clicks for your area and service. After the demo we suggest a budget based on keyword estimates.

Does the free demo cost anything? What if I do not go ahead?

The demo is free. If you decide not to continue after seeing it, there is no charge. We do not create or run any ad account until you ask us to.

Should I run the ads myself or hire someone?

If you can spare time for the setup and a weekly review, running it yourself is realistic. If time is short, or ads run without bringing inquiries, reviewing the page and settings together usually fixes things faster. You can also have us handle the initial setup and take over afterward.

How long until the ads go live?

Once the landing page and settings are ready, launch usually takes a few weeks. Ad review normally finishes within about one business day. After launch, keywords and bids are refined over one to two months as data comes in.

What do I need to prepare?

Your current site URL (or a description of your service), the service you want more of, the area and hours you can serve, plus your logo and photos. If ads are already running, read access lets us review your current setup.

Is it difficult to work remotely by message?

Everything runs by message in Japanese or English, with replies within two business days. Reviews happen through links you open whenever it suits you, so no meetings need to be scheduled.
