Shopify Plus in Japan – cost, features and whether you really need it

Shopify Plus is the enterprise tier of Shopify, and its monthly fee is far higher than any standard plan. Brands usually look at it when sales take off or when they plan to sell overseas or wholesale – yet many of them are well served by a standard plan. This page explains how Shopify Plus pricing works, what the standard plans already do and the specific situations where Plus pays for itself.

What Shopify Plus is and how it differs from standard plans

Shopify Plus sits above the standard plans (Basic, Grow and Advanced). The admin and the way you build a store stay the same; Plus adds the features and support that larger operations need.

  • Checkout customization: more room to add your own fields, content and logic to checkout
  • Custom logic: Shopify Functions in your own custom apps for discounts, shipping and payment rules
  • B2B tools: company accounts, price lists and payment terms per customer
  • Multiple stores: expansion stores for other countries or brands, managed together in one organization
  • Automation and support: tools to schedule sales and product drops, plus dedicated Plus support

Shopify changes which features belong to which plan from time to time, so always check the current comparison table on the official Shopify site.

Five signs you are ready for Shopify Plus

The clearest test is what is holding your store back today. If several of these apply, it is time to look at Plus seriously.

  • At your sales volume, Plus would cost less overall than your current plan's fees
  • You need custom fields or messages in checkout that your current plan cannot add
  • You want wholesale and retail in one store, with prices and terms per business customer
  • You run several stores by country or brand and want shared management
  • Big sales and launches bring traffic spikes and you want publishing to run on schedule

If selling to businesses is the main driver, our guide to B2B e-commerce covers options beyond Plus too. If none of the signs apply yet, Plus mostly adds fixed cost without a clear use for it.

Shopify Plus cost: what you actually pay

The Plus fee depends on your contract, including sales volume and term. As a typical guide, Plus starts at a monthly fee in the low thousands of US dollars on a yearly contract, and once sales pass a certain level the fee switches to a percentage of revenue. The term you sign can change the monthly rate, so get a quote from Shopify's sales team for exact figures.

  • Plan fee: a fixed monthly fee or a revenue-based fee, billed in US dollars
  • Payment fees: Shopify Payments rates are usually lower than on standard plans
  • Apps: monthly costs for reviews, subscriptions, inventory sync and similar tools
  • Build and migration: theme work, checkout extensions, data migration, integrations
  • Ongoing work: updates, maintenance, ads and analytics

The cost people often miss is development. Checkout extensions and custom discount logic need clear requirements and development work after you sign. For standard plan prices and fees, see Shopify pricing plans and compare the full picture.

What standard plans already cover

A common mistake is upgrading for features that standard plans already include. All of these are available on Basic, Grow or Advanced:

  • Selling abroad: Shopify Markets for multiple currencies and languages, prices and shipping by country
  • Automation: Shopify Flow for stock alerts, tagging and order routing
  • Design freedom: theme customization, custom sections and on-brand pages
  • Extra features: public apps for subscriptions, pre-orders, gifting and loyalty tiers
  • Retail stores: Shopify POS with shared inventory and customer data
  • Analytics and ads: GA4, Google Ads, Meta Ads and Google Shopping connections

A sensible path is to settle how your store runs on a standard plan first, then move to Plus once your sales and requirements are clear. Upgrading keeps the same store, so there is no need to start on the top tier.

What to prepare before moving to Plus

Write these down before deciding. It makes both the Shopify sales call and the build discussion much more concrete.

  • Annual sales and orders: last year's figures and next year's forecast – the basis for comparing costs
  • What Plus must solve: checkout changes, B2B, expansion stores – keep it to three goals or fewer
  • Current apps: which ones Plus features could replace and which stay
  • Other systems: how the store connects to ERP, inventory, logistics and accounting
  • In-house roles: who adds products and updates the store, and what you hand to a partner

If requirements are still fuzzy, it pays to see your store structure and workflow first and sign later. For tips on choosing who builds it, read how to choose a Shopify agency.

How UNANOBO helps: a free demo before you pick a plan

The process is simple: free demo, feedback, launch, growth. The founder handles every project personally, so you keep one contact from the first demo to marketing after launch. Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English, and your Shopify and ad accounts stay in your own name.

FAQ

Can a business in Japan sign up for Shopify Plus?

Yes. Pricing is in US dollars and the contract is handled with Shopify's sales team. Building and setting up Plus features is usually done by a separate partner.

Can I start on a standard plan and upgrade later?

Yes. You switch plans within the same store, and products, customers and orders carry over. Starting on a standard plan and upgrading once your needs are clear is usually the smarter route.

Does the free demo cost anything? What if I do not go ahead?

The demo is free, and there is no cost if you decide to stop after seeing it. If you continue, you receive a structure proposal, a plan and an estimate after the demo.

What should I prepare before getting in touch?

Your current store or site URL, your logo and a short description of your products are enough to start. If you are weighing Plus, a rough annual sales figure and a short list of what you want to achieve help us make the demo specific.

You are not based in Japan – does that slow things down?

Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English, and you get a reply within two business days. Reviews happen through shared links and screens, so the project runs smoothly without in-person meetings.

How long does the demo take?

It depends on the size of the store and how much material is ready, so we give you an estimate after reading your request. Even without final materials, we can shape the structure from your current site and product information.
