Stripe integration for your Japan website – fees, methods and setup
Stripe lets a business in Japan accept cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and convenience store payments on its own site, with no monthly fee. The usual questions are what it really costs, what the account review looks at and how to connect it to the site you already have. This page covers Stripe fees and payment methods in Japan, the setup steps, the main integration options and the mistakes worth avoiding.

What Stripe offers businesses in Japan
Stripe bundles everything an online payment needs into one account. There is no setup or monthly fee – you pay a fee only when a payment goes through – which makes it easy to start small. These are the features Japanese accounts use most:
- Cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Discover
- Wallets: Apple Pay and Google Pay for fast checkout on phones
- Konbini and bank transfer: options for customers who prefer not to use a card
- Subscriptions: monthly memberships and recurring orders with Stripe Billing
- Invoices and Payment Links: get paid by sending a URL, without building a checkout
- Dashboard: sales, refunds, payouts and customer records in your browser
Available methods change by country and over time, so confirm on Stripe's official site what a Japanese account supports today. A good first step is to list the payment options your customers actually expect.
Stripe fees in Japan and how payouts work
Stripe charges a percentage of each payment. On the standard Japan plan, domestic cards are typically around 3.6%. International cards, currency conversion and methods such as konbini payments carry different rates or per-transaction fees, so run the numbers against your own products and customers.
- Processing fees: they differ by payment method and can change – check the current pricing page
- Refunds: the original processing fee is usually not returned, so factor this in if returns are common
- Disputes: a chargeback costs time and a set fee
- Payouts: funds go to your Japanese bank account; timing depends on your settings and account status
- Extras: subscriptions, invoicing and advanced fraud tools may be billed separately
On fees alone, another payment provider or a cart's built-in payments may suit you better. Estimate monthly sales and average order value, then compare fees and payout timing side by side. Our guide to choosing e-commerce payments covers the alternatives.

Stripe setup steps and what to prepare
Signing up takes little time once your site is ready, but the review and any document requests can take longer, so start well before your launch date.
- Create the account: register by email and choose company or sole proprietor
- Business details: representative, address, bank account for payouts, a description of what you sell
- Prepare the site: publish the 特定商取引法 (Specified Commercial Transactions Act) disclosure, return and cancellation policy, privacy policy and contact details
- Review: Stripe checks that your business and products fit its terms and may ask for documents
- Test: use test mode and test card numbers to run a purchase and a refund
- Go live: switch to live keys and confirm a small real payment, the payout and the emails
Reviews usually stall on basics: a missing 特定商取引法 page or products that do not match the registration. Japan's credit card security guidelines also expect online stores to use EMV 3-D Secure authentication. Stripe's standard integrations make this straightforward, but requirements are updated, so check the latest guideline.

Choosing how to integrate Stripe
There are several ways to connect Stripe to a website. The right one depends on how many products you sell, how much upkeep you can handle and how much control you want over the design.
- Payment Links: a payment URL per product behind a button – ideal for a few items, deposits or course sign-ups
- Stripe Checkout: a hosted payment page with your logo and colors, with wallets and authentication handled for you
- Embedded payment form: payment completes inside your own page; more design freedom, more development and maintenance
- WordPress and WooCommerce: the official Stripe plugin adds payments to a full store with cart and stock
- Shopify and BASE: both have their own built-in payments, so Stripe is normally not connected directly
For dozens of products with stock and shipping rules, WooCommerce with Stripe or Shopify with its own payments is the practical route. See WooCommerce store development or Shopify payments setup for details.

Common Stripe integration mistakes
Stripe is easy to switch on, and that is why some settings get missed until customers start asking questions. Check these before launch:
- Statement descriptor: if the name on the card statement does not match your shop, customers may dispute the charge
- Order notifications: without proper webhooks, a payment succeeds but no confirmation email or stock update follows
- API keys: never put the secret key in site code or shared documents; limit access to the people who need it
- Mobile checkout: a pay button far down the page or tiny input fields cost sales
- Refunds and disputes: decide who handles refunds and how to answer a card issuer's inquiry
- Tracking: without a GA4 purchase event you cannot judge ads or improvements
The descriptor and notifications can both be checked during testing. Run a purchase, a cancellation and a refund in test mode and have everyone involved look at the emails and the dashboard.
How UNANOBO integrates Stripe: a free demo that takes payments
Before you commit, UNANOBO builds a free demo of your site or store around your brand. With Stripe in test mode, you can click from a product page through the cart to the payment screen and see exactly what your customers will see.
If you only need payments added to an existing site, we decide together whether Payment Links are enough or a WooCommerce store makes more sense, based on your product count and upkeep. The Stripe account and payout bank account are registered in your name, and we help with the 特定商取引法 page and test payments. The founder handles every project personally, from the first demo to improvements after launch, and everything runs by message in Japanese or English.

FAQ
Does the free demo include the Stripe payment screen?
Yes. Stripe is connected in test mode, so you can go from choosing a product to the payment screen without any real charge. You decide whether to continue after seeing it.
Is there any cost if I decide not to go ahead?
No. The demo is there to help you decide, and if you stop, that is the end of it. There is no follow-up pressure.
Can a sole proprietor use Stripe in Japan?
Yes. You will need identity verification, a bank account for payouts and a description of your business, and your site needs a 特定商取引法 disclosure. Some product categories are restricted, so check Stripe's terms first.
Can you add payments to my current website?
Usually, yes. For a few products, Payment Links behind a button is the simplest route; for a larger range we suggest adding a cart with WooCommerce or similar. We look at how your site is built first and pick the option with the least effort and cost.
How long does it take, and what should I prepare?
Payment Links can be live quickly, while a full store typically takes several weeks or more depending on structure and product count. Have your business details, payout bank account, product photos and descriptions, and return and shipping terms ready.
Can we work entirely by message?
Yes. All communication runs by message, in Japanese or English. We also walk you through the Stripe dashboard and refunds step by step in writing.
