Instagram ads guide for Japan – formats, setup and targeting for small brands
Instagram ads let you pay to show your posts in Feed, Stories and Reels to people who do not follow you yet. Even a brand with a small following can reach new customers by area, age and interests. This guide walks through placements and formats, account linking and payment, the setup steps in Ads Manager and the mistakes small brands make most often.

What Instagram ads are and how they differ from regular posts
Instagram ads run on Meta's ad system, the same one behind Facebook ads. A regular post mostly reaches your followers; an ad can reach anyone who matches the conditions you set. Ads carry a "Sponsored" label and a button that sends people to your website, your profile or your messages.
You can start with a small daily budget and pause at any time. As the ad runs, Ads Manager shows impressions, clicks and the inquiries or purchases it produces, so you adjust as you go. They suit businesses whose appeal shows in photos and video: cafes, salons, shops, fashion brands and classes.
Before anything else, write one sentence: who should see the ad, what they should see, and what they should do next. That sentence becomes the basis for your objective, audience and ad copy.
Instagram ad placements and formats
It helps to think in two layers: where the ad appears (placement) and what shape it takes (format).
- Feed: between regular posts; square (1:1) or vertical (4:5) images and video read best
- Stories: full-screen vertical (9:16); keep key elements in the center, away from the top and bottom overlays
- Reels: between short vertical videos; the first few seconds need to carry the message
- Explore and search results: in front of people who are browsing for new content
- Formats: single image, video, carousel (several swipeable cards) and collection (a product showcase)
You do not need every format on day one. One or two vertical images or short videos, with automatic placements switched on, is a sound way to start and learn what works. Add a carousel if you have several products, or a Reels-style clip if atmosphere is your selling point.

Before you launch: account linking and payment
Most setup problems happen with accounts, before the first ad. Work through these steps in order and Ads Manager becomes straightforward.
- Switch to a professional account: set your Instagram to a business or creator account so you can see insights
- Link a Facebook Page: to advertise through Ads Manager, connecting your brand's Facebook Page and Instagram account is the usual setup
- Use a business portfolio: in Meta Business Suite, keep your Page, Instagram account and ad account together under your business
- Add a payment method: a credit or debit card, PayPal or another option offered for your ad account
- Set up measurement: install the Meta pixel on your website so inquiries and purchases are recorded as conversions
You are charged for delivery through the payment method on the ad account. Create the ad account and business portfolio in your own name, even if someone else will run the ads, and give that person access as a partner. Your ad history and data then stay with you whoever manages the account. For budgets and typical spend, see Instagram ads cost.

How to run Instagram ads in five steps
There are two ways in. The "Boost post" button in the app is quick and suits a post that already performs well. Ads Manager gives you full control and suits campaigns aimed at inquiries or sales. We compare the two in how to promote an Instagram post. In Ads Manager the setup follows these steps:
- Choose an objective: awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion or sales – pick the result you want most
- Define the audience: location, age, gender and language, plus interests, custom audiences (site visitors, customer lists) and lookalike audiences that find people similar to them
- Pick placements: Instagram only, or automatic placements across Meta's apps
- Set budget and schedule: a daily or lifetime budget and the dates the ad runs
- Build the ad: image or video, primary text, headline, button and link, then check the preview for each placement
Every ad goes through Meta's review before it runs. Most reviews finish within 24 hours, though some take longer, so leave a buffer before a launch date. Results are unstable for the first few days; give a campaign at least one to two weeks before making big changes.

Where small brands usually go wrong
Launching an Instagram ad is easy. The difference in results comes from what happens before and after the click.
- The ad links to the home page, so people cannot find the product or menu they just saw
- The landing page is hard to read on a phone and slow to load
- No Meta pixel, so nobody knows which ad produced which inquiry or sale
- The audience is narrowed so far that the ad barely gets delivered
- Settings change every few days, so it is impossible to tell what actually helped
- Claims like "guaranteed results" or "cheapest in Japan" that can conflict with Japan's Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations or the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act
Advertising rules vary by industry, and Meta's ad policies are updated regularly, so check the current guidelines before running ads for health, beauty or financial services. If running and improving campaigns in-house is hard to keep up, Instagram ads management explains what you can hand over and how to choose a partner.

FAQ
How much do I need to start Instagram ads?
Meta lets you set a small daily budget, and you can change or pause it at any time. With a very small budget, though, it takes longer to collect enough data to judge results. Our Instagram ads cost page explains how to set a budget for each objective.
Is it worth advertising with only a few followers?
Yes. Ads reach people who do not follow you, so follower count does not limit who sees them. Ads bring new people in, and your profile posts build trust once they visit.
Is the demo really free? What if I decide not to go ahead?
Yes, it is free, and there is no cost if you stop after seeing it. A plan and estimate follow only if you like the direction of the demo.
What should I prepare?
Your Instagram account URL, your current website if you have one, the product or service you want to promote, and any photos or video you can use. If you do not have a Facebook Page or business portfolio yet, we guide you through creating them.
How long until ads go live?
If the accounts and landing page are ready, setup and review usually take a few days. If we build the page first, the free demo, feedback and launch come before that. You get a concrete schedule after the demo.
Does it work well with a studio outside Japan?
Yes. All communication is by message, in Japanese or English, and you get a reply within two business days. Ad results are shared as screenshots and reports, so you can follow everything without meetings.
