How Instagram ads cost is decided
Instagram ads are bought through Meta Ads Manager, and the cost comes from two things: the budget you set and the price set by Meta's auction. There is no rate card. You choose a daily budget or a lifetime budget for the campaign, and delivery stops once that amount is spent, so you are generally not charged beyond what you set.
How you are charged depends on the campaign goal:
- CPM (per 1,000 impressions): the default for awareness campaigns
- CPC (per link click): used when you want traffic to a site or online shop
- ThruPlay (per video view): charged when a video is watched long enough
- CPI (per app install): charged when someone installs your app
The price moves with every auction: how many other advertisers want the same people, how good your ad is, and where it shows – Feed, Stories or Reels. For the basics, see what Instagram ads are, and for Facebook and Instagram together, see Meta ads cost.
Typical Instagram ad rates in Japan
These are the figures commonly quoted for the Japanese market. Treat them as rough guides – industry, season and how narrow your audience is can move them by a factor of two or three.
- CPM: roughly 500–1,000 yen per 1,000 impressions
- CPC: roughly 40–100 yen per click
- Video view: a few yen to around 10 yen per view
- CPI: roughly 100–150 yen per install
Prices climb in busy periods such as the year-end shopping season and the run-up to long holidays, in crowded categories like beauty, real estate and recruiting, and when you narrow location and age too far. Strong images and videos that make people stop scrolling, plus automatic placements, usually bring prices down. Track cost per purchase or booking (CPA) alongside the click price – that is the number your budget decisions should follow.

A realistic budget for a small brand
Meta lets you set a daily budget of just a few hundred yen. At that level, though, you rarely get enough impressions to tell which ad works. For a small shop or brand, a three-stage plan keeps things manageable:
- Test (2–4 weeks): about 1,000–3,000 yen a day, with two or three image and headline variations to compare
- Adjust (1–2 months): shift budget to the ads and placements that respond, and pause the weak ones
- Scale: once cost per sale sits within your limit, grow gradually toward roughly 30,000–100,000 yen a month
Work out your limit from your margin. If one sale earns you 3,000 yen in gross profit, paying more than 3,000 yen to win it loses money. For products people buy again, you can include repeat purchases in the math. Write that ceiling down before you start, and deciding whether to keep a campaign running becomes much easier.

What an agency adds to the cost
You can run Instagram ads yourself. If you hand them to an agency, you pay fees on top of the ad spend. In Japan they usually look like this:
- Management fee: commonly around 20% of ad spend; some agencies set a monthly minimum of several tens of thousands of yen
- Setup fee: account setup, Meta Pixel and tracking, campaign structure – often tens of thousands of yen
- Creative production: banners and short videos, either included in the fee or billed separately
- Landing page: the cost of building a new page for the ads to send people to
The cheapest fee can mean fewer new ads and rare reports, which wastes more ad spend than it saves. When comparing quotes, ask how many new ads you get each month, which numbers are reported and how often, and whose name the ad account is in. Our page on Instagram ads management covers how to choose a partner.

Get ready before you spend
With the same budget, results depend heavily on what is in place before the first ad goes live. Check these points first:
- The page your ads link to loads fast on a phone and leads clearly to a purchase or booking
- Meta Pixel and conversion tracking are set up, so purchases and inquiries are counted
- Your Instagram profile and posts look complete, so visitors from an ad feel they can trust you
- Images and videos exist in vertical format for Stories and Reels and square format for Feed
- The ad account and Business Manager (business portfolio) are in your company's name
The landing page matters most. When someone taps an ad, they should understand the product and how to buy within seconds. Get that page right first and the same click price turns into more sales and bookings.

FAQ
What is the minimum budget for Instagram ads?
Ads Manager accepts daily budgets of a few hundred yen. To gather enough impressions to compare ads, plan on about 1,000–3,000 yen a day even in the test phase. Starting with a fixed test period and a small amount is the safest approach.
Is the demo really free? What if I don't go ahead?
Yes, the demo is free. If you decide not to continue after seeing it, you pay nothing. The structure proposal, and a plan and estimate if you want to proceed, come after the demo.
How long does the demo take?
It depends on how much information you send. You get a reply within two business days, including when the demo will be ready. If you are in a hurry, mention it in your first message.
What do I need to prepare?
Your Instagram account or website address, the product or service you want to advertise, and a rough idea of what you can spend per sale. For the demo, we can work from the photos and content you already have.
Can we work together by message only, from outside Japan?
Yes. Everything – planning, ad reviews and reports – happens by message, in Japanese or English. There is no need to schedule calls across time zones.
How do I pay for the ads themselves?
Ad spend is paid directly to Meta from an ad account in your name, usually by credit card. If you hire us to run the ads, management is billed separately from ad spend. This way you always see exactly how much went to the ads.
