What search ads are and how they work
Search ads – called リスティング広告 (listing ads) in Japan – are the text ads that appear above and below the regular results on Google and Yahoo! JAPAN, marked "Sponsored". They are triggered by the words a person types, which is why they are also known as search-linked advertising. In Japan you can run them through Google Ads and Yahoo! Ads; on Google they are set up as a Search campaign.
You pay per click, and an ad that is only shown costs nothing. The position of your ad is decided in an auction at every search, based on your bid plus quality signals such as how relevant the ad is to the keyword and how useful the landing page is. A few terms make the reports much easier to read:
- Keywords: the search terms you want to appear for. Specific phrases like "area + service" show clear intent
- Match types: exact, phrase and broad match decide how close a search must be to your keyword
- Negative keywords: terms such as "free" or "jobs" that you exclude to avoid wasted clicks
- Ad copy: headlines and descriptions. A responsive search ad holds up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions, and Google tests the combinations
- Cost per click (CPC): what one click costs. In Japan it ranges from tens of yen to several thousand, depending on the industry and competition
- Conversions: the actions you count as results – inquiries, bookings, purchases, calls
Benefits and limits of search ads
The main benefit is reaching demand that already exists. In practice that means:
- High intent: you can match searches like "Shibuya dentist Saturday", made by people about to act
- Fast start: once ads pass review, they can run within days – no waiting for rankings to build
- Small tests: you set the daily budget yourself and can pause or change it at any time
- Tight targeting: show ads only in your service area, during opening hours or on certain devices
- Clear numbers: impressions, clicks, inquiries and cost per inquiry are all measurable
There are limits to plan for. Every click costs money, so competitive keywords get expensive, and visibility stops the moment you pause. A confusing landing page brings visits without inquiries. Google may also spend up to about twice your daily budget on a busy day, while keeping the month within 30.4 times the daily amount – so budget by the month.

Search ads compared with SEO, display and social ads
Each channel has its own strength. Knowing the role of each one makes it easier to split a budget.
- SEO: appears in the regular results with no click cost, but takes months to work. It reaches the same searchers, so it pairs well with search ads
- Display ads: image or video ads on websites and apps, good for reaching people who are not searching yet
- Social ads (Meta Ads): Instagram and Facebook ads targeted by age and interests, strong for visual products
- Google Shopping ads: product listings with photo and price, built for online stores
Search ads work best for local shops and clinics found by "area + business type", urgent services such as repairs, and online stores whose products are searched by name or model number. A brand-new product with little search volume also needs social or display ads for awareness. You can check how often your services are searched with Google Ads Keyword Planner.

What to prepare before you start
Setting up a campaign is straightforward. Launching without preparation is what burns budget. Check these points first:
- Define a result: decide what counts as one conversion – an inquiry, booking, purchase or call
- Set up tracking: make sure GA4 or the Google tag records those conversions
- Landing page: it matches the ad and shows price, service area and how to apply clearly on a phone
- Keyword ideas: list service names, place names and the problems customers describe, plus terms to exclude
- Budget and time frame: set a monthly cap and give it at least one to two months before judging
- Account ownership: open the ad account and billing in your company's name and grant access to any agency
- Ad rules: medical, beauty and health products in Japan fall under Japan's medical advertising guidelines, the Pharmaceutical Act and the Premiums and Representations Act – avoid absolute or exaggerated claims
For step-by-step setup see how to start with Google Ads, and for budgets and typical click prices see search ads cost in Japan. Ad policies and regulations are revised from time to time, so check the latest official information before launch.

Common reasons search ads underperform
When ad spend brings no inquiries, the cause is almost always the campaign settings or the landing page. Typical cases:
- Only broad match keywords, so ads show for loosely related searches
- The search terms report is never checked and no negative keywords are added
- The ad promotes one service, but the click lands on the home page
- No conversion tracking, so nobody knows which keywords produced results
- Settings change every few days, before there is enough data to judge
- Ads run outside the service area or late at night when nobody answers the phone
Regular review fixes all of these. If weekly checks are hard, search ads management is an option – just confirm what the reports include and that the account stays in your name.

FAQ
How much do I need to start with search ads?
You set the budget yourself and can start small. Click prices vary a lot by industry, so budget enough to see a trend over one to two months.
Does the free demo cost anything, and what if I don't go ahead?
The demo is free. If you decide not to continue after seeing it, there is no charge at all. If you do go ahead, you receive a plan and estimate based on the demo.
How soon will I see results?
Ads can start showing within days of approval, but tuning keywords and copy needs data. Most businesses run ads for one to two months and judge by cost per inquiry. Inquiry or sales numbers cannot be promised; you see the data as the campaign improves.
What should I prepare before getting in touch?
Your current site address, the kind of inquiries or bookings you want more of, your service area and a rough monthly budget. Logos and photos help with the demo. No ad account yet? You get guidance from account setup onward.
Should I start with SEO or search ads?
Search ads suit you if you need inquiries soon; SEO builds a lasting base over time. Often the most efficient route is both: test which keywords respond well in ads, then grow pages on those topics through SEO.
Can we work entirely by message?
Yes. Briefing, demo review and post-launch reports all run by message, in Japanese or English. You get a reply within two business days.
