SEO vs MEO – which one your local business needs, or both

"Should we spend on SEO or MEO?" is one of the most common questions from shops, clinics and local services in Japan. The difference comes down to where you appear and what kind of search you win. This guide compares the two, shows how to set priorities for your industry and area, and lists what to do in the first three months.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English

SEO vs MEO at a glance

SEO improves how your website ranks in the regular search results. MEO – the term used in Japan for map optimization – improves how your business appears in Google Maps and in the map block at the top of results, often called the local pack. Both aim at visibility on Google, yet they work on completely different assets.

  • Where it shows: SEO in the organic results; MEO in Google Maps and the local pack
  • What you work on: SEO on your own website; MEO on your Google Business Profile
  • Searches it wins: SEO for research queries like "renovation cost" or "how to choose a dentist"; MEO for ready-to-visit queries like "hair salon Shibuya" or "dentist near me"
  • What Google looks at: for SEO, page content, usability and mentions from other sites; for MEO, the three factors Google publishes – relevance, distance and prominence
  • Reach: SEO can reach the whole country and abroad; MEO mostly the area around your location
  • Effort to start: MEO starts with a free profile; SEO needs time to build pages and content

In short, MEO reaches people nearby who want to go somewhere now, and SEO reaches people who are comparing options. Think about which of the two describes your typical customer.

Your customers' search habits decide the priority

Your industry and catchment area usually tell you where to start. Use this as a guide:

  • MEO first: restaurants, cafes, hair salons, clinics, car repair – walk-in businesses with customers within a few kilometers
  • SEO first: renovation, professional services, schools, B2B, online shops and mobile services without a storefront – anything people research and compare for a while
  • Both at once: local businesses with high prices that people check in advance, such as private dental treatment, custom homes or weddings

A quick test: search Google for "your area + your business type". If a large map block appears at the top, MEO carries most of the weight. If comparison articles and directories fill the page, SEO content is essential in your market. Our page on MEO services goes into the practical steps for the map side.

Your website connects MEO and SEO

The two channels support each other through your website. The website linked from your Google Business Profile affects both how Google understands your business and whether people decide to book.

Most people who find you on the map tap through to your site to check prices, menus and atmosphere before booking. A site that is hard to read on a phone or out of date loses those visitors, even if your map ranking is strong.

  • Use the exact same business name, address and phone number on your site, profile and listing portals
  • Create pages that mention your area: access, service area, location details
  • Publish menus and prices on the site and keep them consistent with the profile
  • Put the booking or contact button where it is visible first on a phone

For the website side of local search, see our guide to local SEO. Even if you focus on one channel, these four points make both work better.

Demo sites we built

Template demos with fictional brands. Yours is built with your own brand and content.

The first three months: how to start

SEO and MEO both build up the longer you keep at them, and the first three months have a clear checklist.

  • Month 1: verify ownership of your Google Business Profile, set categories, hours and photos; check the mobile view of your site and set up GA4 and Search Console
  • Month 2: create a page for each service or menu with useful local detail; decide how you will ask visiting customers for reviews
  • Month 3: make profile posts and review replies a routine; check the queries in Search Console and add answers to common questions on your pages

How fast results appear depends heavily on local competition and your industry. Typically MEO starts moving within weeks to a few months after the profile is in order, while SEO often takes several months to half a year or more. Google decides rankings, so the healthy approach is to watch the numbers and improve step by step.

Common misconceptions and things to avoid

Pushing for quick wins can backfire. Keep these points in mind:

  • Adding keywords like "area + service" to your business name breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended
  • Offering discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews is against Google's policy. Simply asking customers is fine
  • In Japan, reviews or articles commissioned by a business without clear disclosure can fall under the stealth marketing rules of the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations – check the Consumer Affairs Agency's latest guidance
  • Be careful with vendors who guarantee the number one spot. Nobody can promise rankings
  • Chasing map rankings while the website stays outdated

FAQ

With a small budget, should we start with SEO or MEO?

For a walk-in business with nearby customers, MEO is the practical first step because the profile is free. People who find you on the map also check your website, so a mobile-friendly site should follow soon. If customers compare options for a long time, start with the website.

Does the free demo cost anything? What if we do not go ahead?

The demo is free. If you decide not to continue after seeing it, there is no charge at all. If you like the direction, you receive a structure proposal, a plan and an estimate after the demo.

What do we need to send for the demo?

Your current site address or your Google Maps listing is enough to start. Add your logo and any photos you want to use if you have them. If materials are missing, the layout can be shown first with placeholder images.

Can we order only MEO or only SEO?

Yes. You can ask for Google Business Profile work alone or website SEO alone. If we notice something on the other side that affects results, we will point it out.

You are not based in Japan. Can you still support a local shop?

Most SEO and MEO work happens online. For tasks that must be done at the shop, such as taking photos or verifying the profile, you get clear step-by-step instructions by message. Replies come within two business days.

Whose name are the Google Business Profile and analytics accounts in?

They are created and owned in your name, and UNANOBO is added as a manager. If you ever change providers, your reviews and data stay with you.
