Local SEO in Japan – get found beyond the map pack

When someone searches "Shibuya dentist" or "Yokohama roof repair", your business may appear in the map box while your website is missing from the results below. Local SEO is the work of being found in both places by nearby customers. This page covers useful area pages, consistent business details across the web and local signals you can grow step by step.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

What local SEO in Japan covers: the map and the results below it

A search that includes a place name usually shows a map with about three businesses – the local pack – followed by regular results. The map draws mainly on your Google Business Profile; the regular results are driven by your website.

Map optimization is often called MEO in Japan. Local SEO is the broader job and includes three areas:

  • Your website: pages that clearly state where you are, which areas you serve and what you offer in each
  • Your listings: the same name, address and phone number on portals, map apps and directories
  • Local ties: reviews, mentions from local groups and media, and content about the area you work in

Only a handful of businesses fit in the map box, and it depends on where the searcher is. Regular results reach further, so a site that ranks there still brings customers. For a side-by-side view, see SEO vs MEO.

Signs your local SEO needs work

Search "your area + your service" yourself. If any of these sound familiar, there is room to grow:

  • You show up in the map, but the results below are all portals and comparison sites
  • Your address and service area appear only on the company profile page
  • You visit customers, yet the site never says which cities or wards you cover
  • After a move or a new phone number, old details still sit on portal sites
  • Your home page title is just your company name, with no area or service
  • You have good Google reviews, but the site shows few projects or customer stories

Each of these has a clear fix, covered below. If the map box is your first priority, start with our MEO service page.

Build honest service-area pages

A common shortcut is to publish dozens of pages that are identical except for the city name. Google treats thin, near-duplicate pages like these as low value for searchers, so they rarely rank and can weaken how the whole site is seen. Good area pages cover places you actually serve, with details only you could write.

  • Only real service areas: skip places you cannot reach or rarely visit
  • Local specifics: projects done in that area, typical arrival time, parking, the questions people there tend to ask
  • Directions for walk-in businesses: route from the nearest station, landmarks, opening hours, how to book
  • Clear paths: an area index linking to each page, and each page linking to your services and contact form
  • Plain titles and headings: for example "Exterior painting in Machida", so the area and service are obvious at a glance

If you have little to say about a place, group it with neighboring areas and split it out later as projects build up. First step: list your service areas and check that you can write three concrete facts for each.

Citations and consistent NAP

A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number (NAP) on another site. Even without a link, it helps Google confirm that you are a real local business. Consistency matters far more than volume.

  • Set one standard format: business name, address style (chome and block numbers, building name and floor) and one phone number – then match your site footer and Google Business Profile to it
  • List where you appear: industry portals, local information sites, map apps, social profiles, chamber of commerce or trade association pages
  • Fix outdated entries: request corrections for old addresses and unused numbers through each site's admin panel or support form
  • Add structured data: LocalBusiness markup on your site states your name, address, phone and hours in a format search engines read easily

Focus on the listings people in your industry and area actually use, and track them in a spreadsheet with the format and the date you last checked.

Grow local signals: reviews, local content and mentions

Google states that local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance, but relevance and prominence grow with steady work.

  • A simple review routine: after each visit or delivery, share the review link by message or on a card, and reply to every review with care
  • Follow the review rules: Google's policies prohibit offering rewards for reviews or asking only happy customers. Testimonials on your own site can also fall under Japan's stealth marketing rules in the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations, so keep how you asked for them transparent
  • Write about your area: local events you join, advice suited to the local climate or housing
  • Earn local mentions: partners, local associations, events you sponsor and local media, based on real relationships

None of this is one-off work. Pick an amount you can keep up – one article a month, a review request after every job. If replying to reviews is hard to fit in, see our Google Business Profile management.

How UNANOBO handles local SEO: a free demo built for your area

Before you commit to anything, UNANOBO builds a free demo based on your current site and business details, with service-area pages and your local information already worked in. You can see how many areas to cover, how the home page states your location and service, and how visitors move to an inquiry.

The process is free demo, feedback, launch, growth. After launch, the founder personally handles NAP cleanup, structured data, the link with your Google Business Profile and new articles – one contact throughout, by message in Japanese or English. FAQ

If I already do MEO, do I still need local SEO?

The map box shows only a few businesses, and whether you appear depends on where the searcher is. A website that also ranks in the regular results gets found in searches where the map leaves you out. Doing both gives customers more ways to reach you.

I have no shop and visit customers. Can local SEO still work?

Yes. Google Business Profile lets you hide your address and set a service area instead, and your site can show projects and details for each city or ward you cover. Simply stating clearly how far you travel makes it easier for people to contact you.

Does the free demo cost anything? What if I do not go ahead?

The demo is free. If you decide not to continue after seeing it, there is no charge at all. If you do go ahead, you receive a structure proposal, a plan and an estimate after the demo.

What should I prepare before contacting you?

Your current site address, your Google Business Profile name, the areas you serve and the portals you are listed on are enough. Project or shop photos make the area pages more specific, and we list anything missing early on.

How long until local SEO shows results?

New pages typically take a few weeks to a few months to settle in search results, depending on local competition and your current site. After launch we track area searches in Search Console and improve the best-responding pages first.

You work remotely – can you write about my local area?

The founder works remotely from outside Japan. Local details come from what you tell us and your real projects, and you review every page before launch. Replies by message within two business days.
