Japanese keyword research service – decide your pages from real search terms

Before you write articles or rebuild a site for the Japanese market, it pays to know which words your customers type into Google and which page should answer each one. That gives you a clear list of pages to build and topics to write. This page explains how Japanese keyword research works, how to map the results to pages, where it usually goes wrong – and how UNANOBO turns the research into a site structure you can see as a free demo.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

See your target keywords as real pages – free

Send us your current site address, or your industry and target area. We build a free demo of a page structure based on the keywords worth targeting, and you decide after you have seen it.

  • Check the structure on a computer and a phone
  • A suggested order of what to build first

A phone number or an email address is enough – whichever suits you.

What a Japanese keyword research service delivers

Keyword research finds the language your customers and search engines share, and decides which questions your site will answer. A good project leaves you with three concrete deliverables:

  • Keyword list: target terms with estimated monthly searches, search intent and how strong the competing pages are
  • Keyword map: a one-to-one table showing which page answers which keyword
  • Priority plan: which existing pages to fix, which new pages to create and which article topics to write, in order of likely impact

With these in hand, design and copywriting stop being guesswork – every page has a clear reader and a clear question. Keywords also shape the menu and the number of pages, so the research is just as useful for a new website as for a blog. A quick first test: list your current pages and try to state, in one line, the question each one answers.

Why Japanese keyword research needs its own approach

Translating English keywords into Japanese rarely works. Japanese search behavior has its own patterns, and skipping proper research usually shows up as pages that get little or no search traffic.

  • Several scripts for one idea: ホームページ, HP and ウェブサイト, or kanji versus hiragana, can have very different search volumes
  • Japanese users often search with spaces between words, such as SEO キーワード 選定, and combine a service with a city or ward name
  • Internal jargon or product names rarely match the everyday words customers use
  • Chasing only big, high-volume terms leaves you buried under large portals
  • Targeting the same keyword on several pages splits their strength (keyword cannibalization)
  • Comparison searches such as おすすめ or 比較 get answered with a sales page that does not help someone still choosing

All of these are easy to prevent at the research and mapping stage, before any page is built. If a few sound familiar, start with an inventory of the words you want to be found for.

How keyword research works: five steps

The process starts wide and then narrows down. You can begin with free tools.

  • Seed terms: list your products and services, plus the exact phrases customers use in calls and messages and the questions they ask most
  • Expand: collect related terms from Google autocomplete, "People also ask", Google Keyword Planner and, if you have a site, the queries in Search Console
  • Sort by intent: learning terms (〜とは, "what is"), comparison terms (比較, おすすめ), action terms close to a purchase or inquiry (料金, 予約, city names) and brand searches
  • Prioritize: score each term by estimated volume, the strength of the pages already ranking and how closely it fits what you sell; start with terms close to a sale where competition is realistic
  • Assign to pages: give each page one main topic and group close variants on the same page

Treat search volume as a rough guide. Keyword Planner shows ranges for accounts that are not running ads, and a term with only a few dozen searches a month can still be worth targeting if it leads straight to inquiries. Always open the pages that currently rank to see what kind of answer searchers expect.

Building a keyword map that drives your site structure

Keywords become useful once each one has a home on your site. A simple spreadsheet with these columns is enough:

  • Keyword: the main term plus related terms handled on the same page
  • Intent: learning, comparing, buying or inquiring, or brand
  • Page: home, service page, area page, pricing, FAQ or article
  • Existing or new: whether you improve a current page or create one
  • Priority: order based on closeness to a sale and ease of execution

As a rule, action terms belong on service and pricing pages, while learning and comparison terms fit articles and FAQs. A finished map is effectively the first draft of your site structure. See website structure planning for how to turn it into pages, and content SEO for growing search traffic with articles.

Putting the keywords to work after research

A keyword map keeps paying off when you use it throughout production and day-to-day running.

  • On the page: place the main keyword naturally in the title, headings and opening paragraph, and cover related terms and questions in the body
  • Content plan: turn learning and comparison terms into a list of article topics with a publishing order
  • After launch: check Search Console for the queries your pages actually appear for, and adjust pages that show up for unexpected terms
  • Regular review: update the list every three to six months with new and seasonal terms

AI-generated answers now often appear above regular results, so it also helps to answer "what is" and "how to choose" questions briefly and clearly on the page. If you want the writing handled too, see SEO article writing.

How UNANOBO handles keyword research: from map to free demo

At UNANOBO, keyword research is the planning step that comes before any site build or article. We look at your industry, area and current site, organize the target terms and the pages that should answer them, and then show you a page structure based on that research as a free demo. Seeing the keywords turned into menus and headings on a real screen makes it far easier to decide where to start than reading a spreadsheet.

The process is simple: free demo, feedback, launch, growth. The founder handles every project personally, so you keep one contact from the first research to improvements after launch. Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English. Search Console and GA4 are set up in your own name, and after launch we review the same data together.

FAQ

Does the free demo cost anything?

No. Based on your industry and current site, we build a demo of a page structure that reflects the keywords worth targeting. You decide whether to go ahead after seeing it.

What if I decide not to continue after the demo?

That is fine. There is no charge at the demo stage and nothing to pay if you stop. We still explain the thinking behind the structure by message so you can make an informed decision.

How long does keyword research take?

It depends on how many products or services you offer and how wide your target area is. For a small site, a few days to two weeks is a typical range. If you already have a site, access to Search Console makes the research faster and more accurate.

What should I prepare?

Your current site URL if you have one, your main products or services and target area, the questions customers ask most, and any competitor sites you watch. If you use Search Console, read-only access lets us work from your real search queries.

Can you guarantee rankings for the chosen keywords?

No one can promise a specific ranking or amount of traffic, because search engines decide positions. What we do is build pages that match search intent, then watch the queries in Search Console after launch and adjust content and structure.

Can we work together if I am not in Japan or do not speak Japanese?

Yes. Interviews, file sharing, demo reviews and change requests all run by message, in English or Japanese. The research itself covers Japanese search terms, so your site speaks the language your Japanese customers actually use.
