White hat link building in Japan – earn links you never have to hide

Links from other websites are still one of the clearest signals that a page is worth recommending. Shortcuts such as buying links or trading them in bulk can wipe out the rankings you have built. This page explains how off-page SEO works, how small brands in Japan earn links and mentions through content and PR, and what to do about questionable links already pointing at your site.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

Why links still matter for SEO

A backlink is a link from another site to yours. Since its earliest days Google has treated links as something close to a recommendation: pages that relevant, trustworthy sites point to are more likely to be useful to searchers.

Quality counts far more than quantity. When you judge a link, look at:

  • Relevance: does it come from a site in your industry, region or topic?
  • Trust: is the site run by a clear owner and kept up to date?
  • Context: is the link placed in the body text, with a reason to be there?
  • Anchor text: does the linked wording read naturally, without repeating one keyword every time?
  • The destination: does your page deliver what the link promises?

Unlinked mentions – often called citations – matter too. When your brand is named in news, industry sites or reviews, it helps local search and makes it more likely that AI answers mention you. Start by searching your company name and noting where you already appear.

The real risks of bought and fake links

Offers like "50 high-authority backlinks" are still everywhere, including in Japan. Google's spam policies explicitly list buying or selling links to manipulate rankings, excessive link exchanges, automated links and links from sites you build only for that purpose as link spam.

  • Ranking drops: algorithms neutralize unnatural links, and positions built on them disappear
  • Manual actions: a notice arrives in Search Console and part or all of the site loses visibility
  • Slow recovery: removal requests, disavow files and a reconsideration request take months
  • Brand damage: your name ends up on unrelated foreign sites and low-quality link farms

Paid placements themselves are fine. Google asks you to mark links in ads or sponsored articles with rel="sponsored", and links in comments or forums with rel="ugc". Whoever handles your off-page SEO should be able to tell you exactly where each link comes from and how it was earned.

Five white hat ways to earn links

Safe link building means creating a reason to be recommended and then making sure the right people see it. These methods work well for small companies and local businesses:

  • Publish original information: your own survey results, price guides or photos of how the work is done – things nobody else has
  • Write evergreen guides: "how to choose" or "common mistakes" articles become the page others cite
  • Use press releases: a new service, a local initiative or survey data sent through a press release distribution service can lead to coverage by media and industry sites
  • Build on real relationships: ask suppliers, clients and your chamber of commerce or industry association to list you where it makes sense
  • Show up in your community: talks, interviews and local event sponsorships often come with a mention on the organizer's site

All of this depends on pages worth linking to. Our guide to content SEO explains how to build them.

Checklist before you start off-page SEO

Before chasing new links, check your current link profile and the pages that will receive them, so every mention can turn into results.

  • Open the Links report in Search Console to see who links to which pages
  • Check the Manual actions section for any notices
  • Make your company name, address and phone number identical on your site, Google Business Profile and directory listings
  • Find linked pages that now return 404 and redirect them to the right place
  • Review titles, headings and internal links on your own site

That last point decides how much value external links can pass. See on-page SEO for the details. If you find many unnatural links, first ask the site owners to remove them, and consider Google's disavow tool only for what remains. Used carelessly it can remove value you need, and Google itself says most sites never have to use it.

Common link building mistakes

Even well-meant efforts can look like link spam when done the wrong way. Watch out for these:

  • Collecting many links in a short time, all with the same keyword anchor
  • Setting up free blogs that exist only to link to your main site
  • Submitting the site to every link directory and reciprocal link page you can find
  • Making a keyword-rich link a condition for writing a guest article
  • Hiring a vendor who reports only the number of links and never the sources

Off-page SEO builds up over months and years, and the faster a method promises results, the riskier it usually is. To see how on-page work, content and links fit together, visit our SEO services page.

FAQ

What does the free demo show?

A working demo based on your current content and brand, with a structure that includes linkable guides and information pages. You can check it on a computer and a phone. It costs nothing.

What if I decide not to go ahead?

Then we stop there, at no cost. If the direction does not feel right, just tell us.

How long until links make a difference?

Creating content worth citing, promoting it and getting featured typically takes several months or more. Rankings are decided by Google, so no position or timeline can be promised. We track new links and search visibility in Search Console as we go.

A previous agency bought links for us. What now?

First we check Search Console for manual actions and review your links. Harmful links are handled with removal requests first, and disavowing is considered only for what remains. You get a clear explanation of the steps by message.

What do I need to prepare?

Your site address is enough to start. Read access to Search Console lets us look at your links in detail. Any newsworthy topics or partner relationships you can share also help.

Does it work well remotely?

Yes. Everything from the first conversation to day-to-day checks runs by message, in Japanese or English. Replies come within two business days.
