Google Shopping free listings in Japan – show your products at zero ad cost

Free listings let your products appear in Google Shopping and other Google surfaces without paying for clicks. Many shops get stuck on Merchant Center settings or product data rules and end up with listings that never show. This page covers how free listings work, how to set them up for a shop in Japan, how to fix rejected products and when it makes sense to move on to paid Shopping ads.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

What Google Shopping free listings are

Free listings use the product data you submit to Google Merchant Center and show it at no cost. The main place is the Shopping tab in Google Search; depending on the product, listings can also appear in Google Images, Google Lens and YouTube. Clicks are free.

Free listings run on the same product data as paid Shopping ads. Ads let you bid for prominent positions, while Google decides where and how often free listings appear. The product data you clean up for free listings carries straight over to ads later, so the work is never wasted.

  • Cost: no fee to list and no fee per click – you need a Merchant Center account and product data
  • What shows: product image, title, price, store name, shipping and stock information
  • Reporting: Merchant Center shows impressions and clicks for each product

A quick first step: search for your own product type and open the Shopping tab. Notice which images and titles stand out among competing shops – that is your benchmark for your own data.

Check your shop before you apply

To appear in free listings, both your product data and your online shop have to meet Google's policies. Checking these points first saves you from getting stuck in review.

  • Buyable product pages: each product has its own page with price, stock and a working cart
  • HTTPS everywhere: the whole site and checkout run on a secure connection
  • Contact and legal details: address, phone or email and the 特定商取引法 disclosure are easy to find
  • Return and shipping rules: clear conditions, time limits and how shipping is charged
  • Matching data: price (tax included) and availability are the same on the page and in the feed
  • Allowed products: medicines and some health products are restricted or prohibited

Shopify and WooCommerce shops can send products through Google's official app or plugin. BASE shops usually prepare data through an external service or a spreadsheet. If you run a BASE shop and want a stronger search foundation overall, see SEO for BASE shops.

How to list products in Google Shopping for free

Once your shop meets the requirements, the setup itself is straightforward. Here is the basic sequence for a first listing:

  • Create a Merchant Center account: business name, address and contact details, registered in the shop's own name
  • Verify and claim your website: prove domain ownership through Search Console or a tag
  • Set shipping and returns: shipping rates, typical delivery times and the return window
  • Add product data: through your platform's integration, a Google Sheet or a file upload
  • Turn on free listings and wait for review: typically a few days; rejected items show the reason

For the detailed settings and verification steps, see Google Merchant Center setup. After launch, watch the reports for one to two weeks and sort products into those getting impressions and clicks and those that never show – that list guides your next round of fixes.

Why products get rejected or never show

Two situations come up again and again: products approved but barely shown, and a handful of products rejected. Most causes sit in the product data and can be fixed field by field.

  • Price or stock mismatch: a sale price changed on the page but not in the feed
  • Image problems: overlaid text, watermarks, borders or images that are too small
  • Thin titles: an internal name like "Blend A" with no brand, type, size or color
  • Missing identifiers: branded products without a GTIN (JAN code) or brand name
  • Vague category and description: nothing that connects the product to real search terms
  • Policy issues: exaggerated claims, restricted products or missing shop information

Build titles as brand + product type + key details (size, color, volume) to match the words people actually search. In Merchant Center, open the products view, check the flagged issues and fix the most frequent cause first. Original products without a JAN code can still be listed when that is declared correctly.

When to move from free listings to paid Shopping ads

Free listings are a low-risk way to test your data and see which products attract interest before you spend on ads. These are good signs that you are ready for paid Shopping ads:

  • Rejected products are close to zero and feed updates run reliably
  • You can see which products get clicks and which ones lead to sales
  • GA4 tracks visits and purchases coming from Google Shopping
  • You have peak seasons or launches where you want more visibility

Start ads small with the products that performed best in free listings, then expand as the numbers justify it. Create the ad account in the shop's own name so the data stays with you whoever manages it. Campaign structure and budgeting are covered in Google Shopping ads.

How UNANOBO works: product pages and data together

Free listing results depend on two things – the product data and the product page it links to. UNANOBO starts with your shop URL and builds a free demo showing improved product pages and shop information. You check it on a computer and a phone, and decide whether to go ahead once you like what you see.

The process is free demo, feedback, launch, growth. Merchant Center setup, product data, GA4 tracking and later Shopping ads are all handled personally by the founder, so you keep one contact throughout. Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English.

FAQ

Are free listings really free?

Yes. There is no charge for listing or for clicks, and a Merchant Center account is free too. Costs only come in if you run paid Shopping ads or hire someone to prepare your data.

What does the free demo include?

A working demo based on your products and brand, showing how your product pages and shop information can be improved, plus notes on what to watch for in Merchant Center. Building the demo costs nothing.

What if I decide not to go ahead after the demo?

That is completely fine, and there is no charge. You can still use the suggestions as a reference if you set things up yourself.

How long until my products appear?

If the shop already meets the requirements, one to two weeks from account creation to approved products is a typical timeframe. Website verification or fixing rejected items can add time. After that, impressions build as the data is refined.

What do I need to prepare?

Your shop URL, access to your e-commerce admin and Google account, and your shipping and return conditions. If you sell branded products, a list of JAN codes speeds things up.

Is it difficult to work with a studio outside Japan?

Everything runs by message in Japanese or English, with screenshots and step-by-step notes, so you can review at a time that suits you. You get a reply within two business days.
