Ecommerce website cost in Japan – typical ranges by approach and the running costs

The cost of an online store in Japan ranges from almost nothing to tens of millions of yen, depending on the platform and how much is built for you. Comparing quotes on the headline number alone tends to hide monthly fees and transaction charges. This page breaks down typical setup and running costs by approach, what moves the price, and how to compare quotes fairly.

Ecommerce website cost: setup plus running costs

When you budget an ecommerce website, split the cost into what you pay before launch and what you pay every month after it. A cheap setup can come with fees that grow with every sale, so comparing the total over one to three years gives a much clearer picture.

  • Setup: design, page build, product upload, payment and shipping setup, theme or software purchase
  • Monthly: platform or cart subscription, hosting and domain, paid apps, maintenance
  • Per sale: card and payment processing fees, platform sales fees
  • Growth and operations: ads, product photography, new product pages, packing and shipping

Set a rough monthly sales target first. It shows how much the fees will weigh and when a paid plan starts to pay for itself. If you cannot forecast sales yet, plan to start small and grow – that is enough to build a budget.

Typical cost by approach in Japan

There are four common ways to build an online store. These are typical ranges seen in the Japanese market; real quotes vary with requirements.

  • SaaS carts (BASE, STORES and similar): close to zero setup if you build it yourself, roughly tens of thousands to a few hundred thousand yen if an agency styles it. Free plans usually carry higher per-sale fees; paid monthly plans lower them
  • Shopify: agency builds typically run from several hundred thousand to a few million yen. On top come the monthly plan, a paid theme (one-time purchase) and monthly app fees
  • WordPress + WooCommerce: build costs similar to Shopify. The software is free, but hosting, plugins and security updates add ongoing maintenance costs
  • Packaged or custom systems: often several million to tens of millions of yen, suited to businesses that need deep integration with core systems or a unique checkout flow

For a store with a few dozen products that wants to start selling online, a SaaS cart or Shopify covers most needs. See Shopify development cost for what an agency quote includes and Shopify pricing plans for the monthly side.

Six factors that drive the price

Two Shopify quotes can differ by a factor of five because they cover different work. Most of the gap comes from these points:

  • Design depth: adjusting an existing theme or building a custom design around your brand
  • Catalog size: number of products and variants, and who uploads products and edits images
  • Custom features: subscriptions, pre-orders, personalization, bundle discounts, member tiers
  • Integrations: inventory and order systems, warehouses, accounting software, in-store POS
  • Copy and photos: whether the builder writes product text and handles photography
  • Languages and cross-border sales: English pages, foreign currency display, international shipping

When comparing quotes, line up what is included before looking at totals. Product upload volume, rounds of revisions and the support period after launch are where agencies differ most.

Running costs and fees people overlook

As sales grow, percentage-based fees become the biggest running cost. List these before launch and your margin forecast becomes much more reliable.

  • Payment fees: card payments in Japan typically cost around 3–4% of sales; convenience store and deferred payments may charge per transaction
  • Platform fees: sales fees on SaaS carts, or extra charges when you use a third-party payment provider
  • Paid apps and plugins: reviews, subscriptions and delivery date selection each add a monthly fee
  • Maintenance: WordPress updates, theme fixes and troubleshooting
  • Shipping and packing: your free-shipping threshold has a big effect on real margins
  • Marketing: Google Ads, Google Shopping, Meta Ads – or, without ads, time spent on SEO and product pages

Platforms and payment providers revise their fees from time to time, so check the current terms on their official sites before signing up. Keep your domain, payment and ad accounts in your own name; it makes any later move or change of builder far easier.

How to start an online store on a modest budget

The most reliable way to save is to launch with fewer features and add them as you learn what sells. A store built with everything from day one often ends up paying for apps nobody uses.

  • Launch with your best sellers and solid payment and shipping basics
  • Start from an existing theme and make it yours with brand colors, photos and copy
  • Add apps only when you clearly miss a feature
  • Upload products in bulk by CSV to cut setup time
  • Review three months of sales and inquiries before deciding the next investment

FAQ

Does the free demo cost anything?

No. The demo is free, and if you decide not to go ahead after seeing it, you pay nothing. The estimate comes after your feedback on the demo.

Which is cheapest: Shopify, BASE or WordPress?

BASE and similar carts are the easiest way to keep setup costs low. As sales grow, Shopify can work out better on fees and flexibility. WordPress gives the most freedom but needs more maintenance. We recommend an approach once we know your catalog and sales expectations.

How long does it take to build?

With a small catalog and an existing theme, one to two months is a typical timeframe. Custom features or system integrations add time. You get a rough schedule to launch at the demo stage.

What should I prepare before we talk?

Your logo, product photos with a price list, and any stores you like are enough. If you already have a website or Instagram account, send the URL and we can reflect it in the demo. Payment and shipping details can be decided later.

Is it a problem that you are not based in Japan?

Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English. The demo and progress are shared by URL, so you can check them anytime on a computer or phone. We reply within two business days.
