Ecommerce website development in Japan – choose the right build, see your store first
How you build an online store – a cart service like BASE, Shopify, WordPress or custom code – shapes your costs and how easy the shop is to run for years. This page compares the four build methods, shows which fits which business, walks through the steps and what to prepare, and explains why UNANOBO starts with a free demo store built with your real products.

Four ways to build an ecommerce website
Ecommerce website development in Japan usually follows one of four routes. Each sets your upfront cost, monthly fees, design freedom and time to launch.
- Hosted cart services (BASE, STORES, Color Me Shop): sign up and start selling, with no server to manage. Ideal for starting small on a tight budget; design and features stay within what the service offers
- Shopify: a hosted ecommerce platform used worldwide. Themes and apps let you build a strong brand look and add features as you grow, and it supports selling abroad in multiple currencies and languages
- WordPress + WooCommerce: articles, news and the shop live on one site. Very flexible, and it needs ongoing care for hosting, plugins and security updates
- Packages and custom builds: EC-CUBE or fully custom code, tailored to core systems or unusual sales models. Larger budgets and longer timelines, mostly chosen by big retailers
For small and mid-sized shops, the choice today is usually between a hosted service (BASE or Shopify) and WordPress. Our ecommerce platform comparison goes through features and fees in detail.
Which build method fits your business
The safest way to choose is to start from what you sell and who will run the shop day to day. Typical cases:
- A maker or small shop testing a few products: a hosted cart such as BASE. The admin panel is simple and you can open quickly
- A brand that cares about presentation and plans to grow: Shopify. Subscriptions, reviews, member perks and inventory sync can be added step by step with apps
- A business that attracts customers with articles or recipes: WordPress + WooCommerce. Content links naturally to product pages and SEO can be tuned in detail
- Selling to customers outside Japan: Shopify, with built-in currency and language switching and international shipping settings
- Wholesale orders or a link to your own stock and accounting systems: a higher Shopify plan with integration apps, or a custom build
If you are unsure, write down three things: how many products you want to carry a year from now, who will handle orders and shipping, and whether stock should be shared with a physical shop or marketplaces. If Shopify is on your list, see also Shopify development.
Looking at a demo store with your own products makes the choice much clearer – we work it out together.
How an online store build runs and how long it takes
Typically a small shop on a hosted platform takes one to two months; a large catalog or system integrations push it to three to six months. The steps:
- Sales plan: main products, price range, target customers, expected monthly orders
- Platform choice: pick the platform and the features you need, such as subscriptions, pre-orders or gift wrapping
- Structure and product data: categories, names, descriptions, prices, stock and size or color variants in one spreadsheet
- Design and build: home, collection, product and cart pages, designed mobile-first
- Payments, shipping and emails: cards and convenience-store payment, shipping rates, delivery time slots, order confirmation emails
- Test orders and launch: run a real order through to the shipping notice, add GA4 and ad tracking, then go live
Product data and photos usually take longest. With a large catalog, start the spreadsheet early and fill it in while the design is in progress.

What to prepare, including the legal basics
Settle your sales rules alongside the design. Having these ready makes the build much smoother:
- Logo files and two or three reference sites that show the look you want
- Product photos (front, in use, showing size) and draft descriptions
- Shipping rates, carrier, dispatch time, return and exchange terms
- The payment methods you want and the business details payment providers ask for during review
- Your domain, plus email marketing and social media accounts
Online sellers in Japan must publish a notice under the Act on Specified Commercial Transactions (特定商取引法): business name, address, phone number, prices, shipping fees, payment method and timing, delivery timing and return terms, among others. A 2022 amendment also clarified what the final order confirmation screen must show. Cosmetics and health foods bring extra rules under the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act and the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations. Requirements change, so check the latest guidance from the Consumer Affairs Agency.
Shipping rules and legal notices can come later; with a few product photos we can start the free demo.
Checklist for outsourcing your ecommerce build
Comparing quotes on price alone can lead to surprise work and fees after launch. Before you choose a partner, check these points:
- Account ownership: the store, domain, payments, GA4 and ad accounts are registered in your company's name
- Monthly costs: platform plan, paid apps, theme and payment fees explained separately from the build fee
- After launch: you learn how to add products yourself, and you know how to request fixes and new features
- Growth plan: SEO, Google Shopping and social ads can be discussed with the same partner
- A shared picture of the result: you can see screens built with your own products before signing anything

FAQ
What does the free demo store include?
A working demo centered on the home page and product pages, built with your logo, colors and the product photos and details you send. You can check it on a phone too. Building the demo costs nothing.
Is there any cost if I decide not to go ahead?
No. If the direction is not right for you after seeing the demo, you can simply stop there. If you continue, you receive a structure proposal, a plan and an estimate based on the demo.
I sell on BASE now. Can you move my shop to Shopify?
Yes. Much of the product data can be exported and moved, and images and categories are reorganized for the new store. If you use your own domain, URL redirects are set up, and we plan together how and when to tell your regular customers.
Can we start without final photos or descriptions?
Yes. The demo can use the photos you have or your current marketplace listings, and you get a clear list of missing materials.
How long does it take to launch?
You get a reply to your inquiry within two business days. A small catalog on a hosted platform typically takes one to two months; larger catalogs or integrations take three months or more. You receive a concrete schedule after reviewing the demo.
Can the whole project run by message, without meetings?
Yes. From the first inquiry to running the store after launch, everything works by message in Japanese or English, and decisions stay in writing for easy sharing inside your company.
