Shopify store development in Japan – see your store before you decide
Building a Shopify store for Japan takes more than picking a theme and adding products. Customers here expect familiar payment options, delivery time slots, clear shipping fees and a proper legal notice page before they buy. This page walks through what a Shopify build covers, how it runs, what to decide before you hire someone and where projects usually stumble – and why UNANOBO starts by building a free demo of your store.
- Free demo – decide after you see it
- By message, in Japanese or English
- One person from demo to launch

What Shopify store development covers
Most of the work in Shopify store development goes into the settings that make a store sell, more than into the visuals. Splitting the scope into five areas makes quotes easier to compare.
- Store basics: store name, yen currency, tax-inclusive prices, notification emails, staff accounts
- Theme and design: choosing a theme, applying your logo and colors, laying out the home and product pages
- Products: names, prices, variants such as size and color, stock, photos and collections
- Payments and shipping: cards and local payment methods, carriers, shipping rates, delivery date and time
- Launch essentials: custom domain, the legal notice required by Japan's Act on Specified Commercial Transactions, privacy policy, GA4 and Google and Meta connections
Payments, shipping and the legal pages are the parts you cannot skip when selling in Japan. Decide which payment and delivery options you will offer before design starts, and you avoid rework later.
What to decide before you hire a Shopify developer
Opening a Shopify account takes minutes. If you outsource the build, a few early decisions shape both the timeline and the budget. Write these four down and the first conversation becomes specific.
- What you sell: number of products, variants, subscriptions or pre-orders, gift wrapping
- Where you sell: your own store only, or also Instagram, a physical shop or other marketplaces
- Who runs it: who adds products, updates stock and handles orders, and how much you want to do in-house
- Migration: whether product and customer data moves over from BASE, Rakuten, WooCommerce or another platform

Japanese payments and shipping: what to check
Shopify's default settings do not fully match how people in Japan shop. Check these points before launch.
- Payment methods: Shopify Payments covers credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and more. Convenience store payment, bank transfer, pay-later and PayPay are typically added through payment apps or external providers, after checking current availability
- Transaction fees: using a payment provider other than Shopify Payments adds a transaction fee that depends on your plan
- Shipping rates: flat nationwide, by region (Hokkaido, Okinawa, remote islands), by weight, plus a free-shipping threshold
- Delivery date and time: not built in, so a delivery date app collects the preferred day and time slot at checkout
- Fulfillment: how you will print labels for Yamato, Sagawa or Japan Post – via an app or CSV export
- Legal pages: the commercial transactions notice, return and exchange terms, privacy policy
Many apps carry a monthly fee, so restraint pays off. Start with the essentials and add more once orders grow – it keeps both costs and admin work down.

How a Shopify build runs and what to prepare
Typically a small store built on an existing theme takes one to two months; a large catalog or heavily customized design takes around three. The steps look like this:
- Requirements: products, payment and delivery options, services to connect
- Theme and structure: free or paid theme, layout of the home and product pages
- Design and products: apply your brand and bulk-import product data by CSV
- Payments, shipping, legal pages: set up checkout options and rates, write the required notices
- Test orders: buy on phone and computer, check emails, stock changes and shipping totals
- Launch and marketing setup: connect the domain, GA4, Google Merchant Center and Meta
It helps to have ready: logo files, product photos, a product list with names, prices and stock (a spreadsheet is fine), your carrier contract details, business information and two or three stores you like. See choosing a Shopify theme and Shopify development cost for more detail.

Where Shopify builds usually go wrong
When a new store does not sell or is hard to run, the cause usually goes back to the build.
- Launching without test orders, so shipping totals are wrong and some emails are still in English
- Installing app after app, which raises monthly costs and slows the store
- Customizing the theme so heavily that updates and small edits become impossible
- Product photos in mixed sizes and ratios, making collection pages look messy
- The store or domain registered in the developer's name, so control is hard to take back
Create the store, domain, ad and analytics accounts in your own name from day one. If someone builds it for you, give them a staff account – you keep full control at all times.

FAQ
What does the free demo include?
A working store design, centered on the home and product pages, built from your logo, colors and the product photos you send. You can check it on mobile too. You decide whether to continue after seeing it.
Is there any cost if I decide not to go ahead?
No. The demo is free and you can say no after seeing it. If you want to continue, you receive a structure proposal, plan and estimate after the demo.
Are Shopify fees and app costs separate?
Yes. The Shopify subscription, paid themes and apps are billed directly to your own store account. We suggest a plan and apps once we know your catalog and how you sell.
Can you move my store from BASE or another platform?
Yes. Product and customer data can usually be moved by CSV, and we confirm the scope in advance. Send your current store URL and we show you a free demo of how it would look on Shopify.
Can we start without finished photos or product data?
Yes. The demo can use the photos you have or placeholders, and product data can be filled in step by step from a simple list. You get a clear list of needed materials early on.
You are not based in Japan – is working by message practical?
Yes. Everything from the first question to post-launch work runs by message, in Japanese or English. Screenshots and admin guidance are shared the same way, and you get a reply within two business days.
