Shopify Japan setup – localization, payments, shipping and the legal page

Shopify works well in Japan, but a store built for other markets still feels foreign to Japanese shoppers. Natural Japanese copy, a proper legal notice page, payment options like konbini and PayPay, and shipping that matches local habits are what make first-time buyers comfortable enough to check out. This page walks through each part of a Shopify Japan setup and explains how UNANOBO shows you a finished Japan-ready store as a free demo before you decide.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

What a Shopify Japan setup covers

In Japan, Shopify offers a Japanese admin and help center, selling in yen and card payments through Shopify Payments. The details Japanese customers take for granted are added store by store, through settings and apps. They fall into four areas.

  • Language: storefront wording, notification emails, Japanese fonts and line breaks
  • Legal: the legal notice required by the Act on Specified Commercial Transactions, a privacy policy, return terms
  • Payments: cards plus konbini (convenience store) payment, QR code payments, buy now pay later, bank transfer
  • Shipping: shipping rates, delivery date and time selection, carrier integration

A gap in any one of these is enough to lose shoppers after they add items to the cart. Start by noting which of the four areas your store has not touched yet.

Japanese localization: what usually gets missed

Switching the admin to Japanese does not change what shoppers see. Storefront text comes from your theme, and many international themes ship with stiff, literal Japanese in buttons, error messages and emails. Before launch, check these points:

  • Open the theme language editor and read every cart, checkout and error message
  • Rewrite order confirmation, shipping and password emails in your brand's own voice
  • Make sure the address form runs postal code, prefecture, city, and names run family name first
  • On a phone, check Japanese font weight, line spacing and awkward line breaks around punctuation
  • If you keep an English version, use a translation app such as Translate & Adapt with Shopify Markets to switch language and currency

The final step is the one that matters most: place a test order and read the whole journey, including the emails, as a Japanese customer would.

The legal notice page and other pages a Japanese store needs

Anyone selling online to consumers in Japan must display seller details and sales terms under the Act on Specified Commercial Transactions (tokushoho). Shopify's policy pages are the usual place for this notice, linked from the footer. It typically lists:

  • Seller name, responsible person, address, phone number and email
  • Prices including tax, plus shipping and any other fees
  • Payment methods and when payment is due
  • When goods are delivered after an order
  • Whether returns and exchanges are accepted, on what terms and how to request them
  • For subscriptions: number of deliveries, total cost and how to cancel

A 2022 amendment also requires the final order confirmation screen to show quantity, price, payment timing and cancellation terms clearly. Details such as how sole proprietors display an address can change, so check the latest guidance from the Consumer Affairs Agency. Add tax-inclusive pricing and a privacy policy, and the store reads as trustworthy from the first visit.

Payments Japanese shoppers expect: konbini, PayPay and pay later

Many shoppers in Japan switch between cards, paying at a convenience store, QR code apps like PayPay, buy now pay later and bank transfer. If their usual method is missing, they hesitate at the last step. Pick the mix that fits your customers:

  • Cards: Shopify Payments covers the major brands, with Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • Konbini payment: added through Shopify Payments or an external provider such as KOMOJU
  • PayPay and other QR payments: added through a provider or app that supports them
  • Buy now pay later: offered through a pay-later service app; reassuring for first-time buyers
  • Bank transfer: set up as a manual payment method, with a clear process for confirming payment

Supported methods and fees differ by provider and change over time, so check each provider's current terms first. Our guide to Shopify payment setup compares the options in more detail.

Shipping in Japan and what Shopify costs to run

Japanese customers expect precise delivery. Agree on these points with whoever packs the orders, and you avoid rework after launch:

  • Rates: flat nationwide or by region, how to handle Hokkaido, Okinawa and remote islands, a free-shipping threshold
  • Delivery date and time: Shopify has no built-in picker for this, so add a delivery date app
  • Carriers: export order data in a format Yamato, Sagawa or Japan Post label systems can import
  • Gifts: accept noshi wrapping or gift messages through product options or order notes
  • Tracking: send the tracking link in the shipping confirmation email

Running costs come from three places: the monthly plan, payment processing fees, and paid apps or themes. Plans are cheaper when billed yearly, and current prices are on Shopify's pricing page. Every app adds to the monthly bill, so decide which features you need before installing anything.

FAQ

Does the free demo cost anything?

No. The demo is free. It is a working Japan-ready store built around your brand and products, centered on the home page and product pages. The plan and estimate come after you have seen it.

What if I decide not to go ahead after the demo?

That is fine, and there is nothing to pay. If you share what did not fit, we take it as useful feedback.

How long does it take to launch a store for Japan?

It depends on the number of products and the payment and shipping setup, but a small store typically takes one to two months. Payment provider reviews can take time, so applications start early. We reply to every inquiry within two business days.

What do I need to prepare?

Your brand name, logo, and product details and photos are enough to start. Send your current site or store address if you have one, plus two or three shops you like. The legal notice content and shipping terms can be worked out together while looking at the demo.

Our company is outside Japan. Can you set up our Shopify store for Japanese customers?

Yes. Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English. You also get advice on wording for Japanese shoppers and on which payment and shipping options are common in Japan.

Can you just localize or fix our existing Shopify store?

Yes. We can rework the Japanese copy, payments, shipping and the legal notice page of a store you already run. Send us the store address and we show you the improved version as a free demo. Updates and marketing after launch run through the same contact.
