Shopify store not selling? Find the stage where buyers drop off

Your Shopify store is live, maybe even getting visits, but orders are not coming in. Before adding more ads or apps, find out where shoppers actually leave. This page breaks a Shopify store that is not selling into four stages – traffic, trust, product pages and checkout – with checks for each and a clear order for the fixes.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

Find out why it is not selling – free

Send us your Shopify store URL. We check it across four stages and show you a free demo of the improved pages.

  • A four-stage check from traffic to checkout
  • An improved product page you can click through
  • A clear order for the fixes

A phone number or an email address is enough – whichever suits you.

Why a Shopify store is not selling: check four stages

In most stores that struggle, the problem sits mainly in one stage. Open Analytics in your Shopify admin, take the last 30 days and map the numbers to these four stages.

Shopify's reports show sessions, the share of sessions that added to cart, reached checkout and completed a purchase. The biggest drop between two steps tells you where to work first.

  • Traffic: are enough people reaching the store, and from where?
  • Trust: does a first-time visitor feel safe buying from you?
  • Product pages: do they explain the product well enough to earn an add-to-cart?
  • Checkout: can people who added to cart pay without friction?

E-commerce conversion rates vary by category and price, but 1–3% is a common rule of thumb. Write down your own numbers and start with the stage that shows the steepest fall.

Traffic and trust: no visitors, or visitors who leave at once

If you get only a few hundred sessions a month, traffic is the main job – even a healthy conversion rate produces few orders from a small audience. If visits are fine but people leave the home or product page quickly, trust is the likely issue.

  • Almost all visits come from your own social posts, with little from search or ads
  • Collection and product names use internal terms instead of the words people search for
  • Theme demo images or untranslated text are still there, so the store feels unattended
  • The legal seller notice (tokushoho), shipping costs and return terms are hard to find
  • There is no brand story or maker profile, so nothing sets you apart
  • Contact is a bare form with no idea when a reply will come

For growing search traffic step by step, see our guide to Shopify SEO. On the trust side, making the brand page, company details and shipping and return rules reachable in one click from the home page already changes first impressions.

Product pages: remove the reasons not to add to cart

Plenty of visits but a low add-to-cart rate almost always points to product pages. Online, shoppers judge by photos and text alone. Review your best sellers first against this list.

  • Photos: full view, close-ups, an in-use shot that shows size, and one image per color
  • Description: materials, size, how to use and care – the questions people ask before buying
  • Price confidence: a clear reason for the price, such as quality or how it is made
  • Mobile view: price and add-to-cart button visible near the top of the screen
  • Stock and shipping: availability and dispatch time shown on the page
  • Reviews: if you use a review app, real reviews actually appear

In a Shopify theme, simply reordering sections can make a product page much easier to read. Our page on product page improvement covers photos and copy structure in detail.

Checkout: added to cart, then gone

When carts fill up but few orders complete, something right before payment is causing doubt or effort. Cart abandonment often happens when shipping costs or payment options appear too late.

  • Shipping cost shows up only on the last screen – give an estimate on the product page or in the cart
  • No free-shipping threshold is shown – add an "X yen to free shipping" note in the cart
  • The preferred payment method is missing – beyond Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay, options such as convenience-store payment or pay-later can often be added with payment apps
  • Account creation is required, which puts off first-time buyers
  • Japanese wording or address field order feels unnatural
  • Nobody has placed a test order, so errors go unnoticed

Place one test order yourself on a phone – you will see exactly where it feels slow. Shopify can also email shoppers who abandon checkout, so make sure that setting is switched on.

How to run Shopify improvements and what to prepare

Fixing one thing at a time while watching the numbers makes it much easier to see what worked. A practical order:

  • Record the baseline: sessions, add-to-cart rate, checkout rate, conversion rate, main traffic sources
  • Pick one stage: the one with the biggest drop
  • Start with best sellers: the few products that bring most of the revenue
  • Wait two to four weeks: compare the same period, then move on
  • Check tracking: confirm GA4 and ad platforms record purchases correctly

Before talking to a Shopify consultant or agency, gather your store URL, main products and price range, target customer, past marketing and rough monthly sales. For the wider picture, see how to increase e-commerce sales.

FAQ

What do I get in the free demo?

A review of your store across traffic, trust, product pages and checkout, plus a working demo of an improved home page or best-seller page. You can compare it with your current store on a computer and a phone. It costs nothing.

What if I decide not to go ahead?

That is fine. There is no cost if you stop after the demo, and you are welcome to use what you saw as a guide for your own fixes.

Do you need access to my Shopify admin?

Not for the demo – your public store URL is enough. If we later look at analytics together, you can add an account with only the permissions needed. You never need to share your password.

How soon will I see a difference?

For product page and checkout fixes, a store with steady traffic can usually compare numbers within a few weeks. Search traffic typically takes several months. Sales figures cannot be promised, but every change is checked before and after with real data.

Can we work only by message?

Yes. Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English, and you get a reply within two business days, so you can review things at your own pace.

Can you help with theme changes and app cleanup?

Yes. We can refine your current theme or move to a new one. Unused apps can slow a store down, so we suggest what to keep and what to remove. Your store and ad accounts stay in your name.
