What is GA4? The basics of Google Analytics 4
GA4 records how people find your website or online store, what they look at and whether they go on to send an inquiry, book or buy. The previous version, Universal Analytics, stopped collecting data in July 2023, so today "Google Analytics" means GA4.
GA4 records every action – a page view, a scroll, a click, a form submission – as an event. That makes it easier to follow visitors across computer and phone, and it is built to connect with Google Ads and Search Console. In practice, GA4 tells you:
- Acquisition: whether visitors came from search, ads, social media, maps or links on other sites
- Behavior: which pages are read most, how far people scroll and what they click
- Results: inquiries, bookings, purchases, phone taps – the actions that matter to your business
- Audience: new versus returning visitors, regions and devices
A good first step: check whether GA4 is installed on your site and whether you can log in to it yourself.
Why GA4 setup decides how well your ads and SEO work
Paste the GA4 tag on a site and it starts counting page views. What it does not do on its own is count inquiries, bookings or sales – the numbers you actually care about.
Google Ads uses the results you measure (key events) to steer its automated bidding. If those results are missing or wrong, the campaigns optimize toward the wrong thing and budget drifts. SEO has the same problem: without knowing which pages lead to inquiries, you cannot decide which page to improve next. Typical signs of a weak setup:
- Inquiry or order counts in GA4 are far from the real numbers
- Page views are counted twice because the tag is installed twice
- Your own staff and your web agency are counted as visitors
- You lose track of visitors once they move to a booking or payment page
- Only a former agency has admin access, so you cannot change anything
If any of these apply, decisions about ad spend and content are based on numbers that do not match reality. Check the tracking itself before you read the reports.

The GA4 numbers to look at first
GA4 has many reports. For a small business site, these four checked once a month already go a long way:
- Acquisition – Traffic acquisition: sessions and results by channel, such as organic search, paid search, social and referrals
- Engagement – Pages and screens: your most viewed pages and the average engagement time on each
- Key events: inquiries, bookings and purchases you have marked as results
- Engagement rate: the share of visits that lasted over 10 seconds, viewed two or more pages or triggered a key event
If you are used to bounce rate from the old version, think of engagement rate as the share of visits where people really looked at the site. Compare each month with the previous month and the same month last year, and look for the reason behind each change. Our guide to GA4 reporting and analysis goes deeper.

How to set up GA4 step by step
Whether you install GA4 for the first time or fix an existing setup, the essential settings are the same. Work through them in this order:
- Account and property: create them under your own Google account and give your agency access
- Data stream and tag: add the tag with your measurement ID (it starts with G-). Shopify and WordPress also offer integrations or plugins
- Enhanced measurement: turn on automatic tracking of scrolls, outbound clicks and file downloads
- Key events: mark the actions that mean business – completed inquiries, bookings, purchases, phone taps
- Internal traffic: register your office IP addresses and filter them out
- Data retention: raise it from the default two months to 14 months so explorations can cover longer periods
- Links: connect Google Ads and Search Console so ad results and search queries appear in GA4
If you also run ad or social media tags, Google Tag Manager makes adding and changing them much easier – see Google Tag Manager setup. Sending visitor data to outside tools may also call for an update to your privacy policy; the rules depend on your business, so check the latest official guidance.
We propose your key events together with the free demo.
Common GA4 mistakes and how to check your tracking
Once the setup is done, use the site yourself and watch what GA4 records. The Realtime report, DebugView and Google's Tag Assistant show whether clicks and form submissions are tracked as they happen. Common mistakes to look for:
- A tag pasted into the site and a Tag Manager tag both fire, doubling the numbers
- Reloading the thank-you page counts the same inquiry again
- Test submissions stay in the data and feed Google Ads bidding
- Visitors move to a booking or payment domain without cross-domain tracking
- After a site redesign, new pages go live without the tag
Sending one test inquiry and confirming it shows up once in both GA4 and Google Ads catches most of these. If you would rather not do the checks yourself, our GA4 setup service can take it from the audit onward.

FAQ
Is GA4 free?
Yes, GA4 is free for normal use. There is a paid edition, Google Analytics 360, aimed at large enterprises, but the free version is enough for typical company websites and online stores.
What happened to my old Universal Analytics data?
Universal Analytics stopped collecting data in July 2023, and access to past data in the interface ended after that. The data was not moved into GA4, so your comparisons start from the day GA4 was installed. The sooner the setup is right, the longer the history you can compare.
Does the free demo cost anything, and what if we do not go ahead?
The demo is free. If you decide not to continue after seeing the demo and the tracking proposal, nothing is charged. If you do continue, you receive a plan and estimate after the demo.
What do we need to prepare for GA4 setup?
Access to your website's admin panel and a Google account to own GA4 and Google Ads. If you already have GA4, you share admin access to that property. No passwords need to be handed over – access is granted through permissions.
Can GA4 be set up remotely by message?
Yes. GA4 and tag setup happen entirely online, so location makes no difference. Progress and anything you need to check are shared by message, in Japanese or English, with replies within two business days.
