GA4 and Google Ads reporting – the numbers an ad-driven site should check every month

You installed GA4, but the screens are full of numbers and you still cannot tell whether your Google Ads budget brings real inquiries. That is one of the most common frustrations we hear. This page focuses on sites that get their visitors from ads: which GA4 numbers to track, how to read a Google Ads report and how to put together a monthly report that leads to clear next steps.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

A site you can measure – free demo

Send us your current site address. We build a free demo of a new design with the path to an inquiry and tracking points built in, plus a proposal of what to count as results.

  • A design built around a clear path to inquiries
  • A proposal of which actions to track as key events
  • Click through it on a computer and a phone

A phone number or an email address is enough – whichever suits you.

GA4 reporting starts with choosing fewer numbers

GA4 records a lot of detail, which is exactly why browsing every screen wastes time. For a site that relies on ads, these five numbers make a solid monthly baseline:

  • Key events: form submissions, completed bookings, phone taps or purchases – the actions you count as results
  • Session source / medium: where visits come from, such as google / cpc (Google Ads) or google / organic (search)
  • Key event rate: the share of visits that ended in a result. It reflects both ad quality and page quality
  • Engagement rate: the share of visits that lasted over ten seconds or viewed two or more pages – a quick check on whether your landing pages get read
  • Landing pages: visits and results by the first page opened, so you can see whether ads point to the right page

All of this depends on inquiries and bookings being recorded correctly as key events. If that is not in place yet, see our GA4 setup service, and for the basics read what GA4 is.

How to read Google Analytics: four reports to open each month

Opening the same reports in the same order every month makes changes easy to spot. These four cover most of what an ad-driven site needs:

  • Acquisition › Traffic acquisition: visits and key events by channel or source / medium – compare ads, search and social
  • Engagement › Landing page: whether the pages your ads point to are read and convert
  • Engagement › Events: a quick check that form, call and booking events are still firing
  • Explore › Funnel exploration: landing page → form → thank-you page, to see where people drop off

Compare each month with the previous month and the same month last year to avoid reading seasonal swings as trends – just switch on "Compare" in the date range. If a number suddenly jumps or collapses, first check that event tracking has not stopped.

What to check in a Google Ads report

GA4 shows what happens after people arrive. The Google Ads report shows what happens before: when your ad appears, who clicks and what it costs. Read together, they tell you where to improve.

  • Cost, clicks and average CPC: which campaigns and keywords use the budget
  • Click-through rate: whether the ad text matches what people searched for
  • Conversions and cost per conversion: what one inquiry or booking costs
  • Search terms report: the actual searches that triggered your ads; add irrelevant ones as negative keywords
  • Impression share: how often your ad showed out of all chances it had – it reveals budget or bid limits
  • ROAS (for online shops): revenue per unit of ad spend

GA4 and Google Ads rarely report exactly the same number of conversions. They use different date rules, different attribution settings and are affected differently by cookie consent. Decide up front which source is your reference for monthly comparisons, and the report stays consistent.

How to build a monthly ad report – and where it goes wrong

A useful report ends with a short list of what to do next. This order keeps it focused:

  • State the goal in one line: for example, "20 inquiries a month within our target cost per inquiry"
  • Summarize results: cost, conversions and cost per conversion, next to last month and last year
  • Find the reason for changes: split by campaign, keyword and landing page to locate the biggest moves
  • Log what was done: ad copy changes, new negative keywords, page edits – the context behind the numbers
  • Pick next month's actions: two or three tests, checked in the next report

Most problems sit in the tracking itself: an inquiry event counted twice, test submissions mixed into results, or Google Ads not linked to GA4. If you want charts that update on their own, connect GA4 and Google Ads in the free Looker Studio and the report keeps the same format every month.

Fix the tracking base before the report

A site with a clear path to an inquiry produces numbers that are easy to read – see it first in a free demo.

FAQ

Does the free demo cost anything?

No. Send us your current site address and we build a demo design with a trackable path to an inquiry, free of charge. You decide whether to go ahead after seeing it.

What if I decide not to go ahead after the demo?

That is completely fine. There is no charge and no follow-up pressure. The tracking ideas that come with the demo are yours to use in your own analysis.

Can you help if GA4 is not set up yet?

Yes. We create the GA4 property, set up key events for forms, calls and bookings, and link it with Google Ads. If GA4 is already in place, we start by checking that the data is recorded correctly.

Can we keep our existing Google Ads account?

Yes. Your account stays in your name and you share admin access with us, so past data carries over for comparisons. If you ever stop working with us, the account and its data remain yours.

When and how do I receive the monthly report?

The report for the previous month arrives early in the month by message, in Japanese or English. You can ask questions right in the same thread, and you get a reply within two business days.

What should I prepare before getting in touch?

Your current site address and the one result you most want more of – inquiries, bookings or sales – are enough. If you already run ads, a rough monthly budget and your main keywords or areas help us move faster.
