The best website builder for a business in Japan – how to choose, and where tools stop

Every website builder promises to be easy and to start for free, which makes it hard to pick the right one for a real business. Choose badly and you hit missing features after launch, then lose time rebuilding or migrating. This guide compares Wix, STUDIO, WordPress, Shopify and AI website builders from a business point of view, and shows when a tool is enough and when it is time to bring in a professional.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

Four questions to answer before you pick a website builder

How well a website builder works for you depends on what goes on the site and who keeps it updated. Write down these four points first and you can narrow the field to two or three candidates.

  • Purpose: company profile, inquiries, bookings, recruiting or online sales – which comes first?
  • Size and update rhythm: around five pages edited a few times a year, or news and blog posts every week?
  • Who edits: which person on your side will update it, and on a computer or a phone?
  • Future needs: will you add English pages, booking, memberships or a shop later?

Future needs are the point people skip most often. If a simple profile site today will need online sales or an English version within a year or two, choosing a tool that already supports them saves a migration later.

The main website builders and what each one is good at

These are the tools businesses in Japan use most. All of them are solid; the difference is the job each one fits.

  • Wix: drag-and-drop editing, a large template library, and add-ons for bookings and online stores. The free plan shows Wix ads and uses a Wix subdomain, so for business use plan on a paid plan with your own domain
  • STUDIO: a Japanese no-code tool known for clean layouts and good Japanese typography, with a built-in CMS for news and blogs. The design freedom is real, and getting a polished result takes some practice
  • WordPress: the most widely used CMS, with plugins for almost anything and full control over SEO. You manage hosting, core and plugin updates, and security yourself or with a partner
  • Shopify: built for selling online, with payments, inventory, shipping settings and an app store in one place. There is a monthly fee plus payment fees, and it can be more than a profile site needs
  • BASE: a Japanese online store service with no upfront cost; you pay fees on sales, which makes it a good way to test selling on a small scale

For a deeper look at WordPress, Shopify and other platforms, see our CMS comparison. When in doubt, pick the tool the person who will update the site finds easiest – that is what keeps a site alive after launch.

How far AI website builders can take you

Wix, STUDIO and other major tools now offer AI features: describe your business and the tool drafts a structure, copy and images in minutes. That is genuinely useful for getting a first draft on screen.

  • Good at: page structure drafts, first versions of headings and intro text, color and layout options
  • Weak at: describing what really sets your business apart, getting service details right, following industry rules on wording
  • Watch for: generated copy tends to sound like everyone else's and can contain things that are simply not true – always have a person review it before publishing

In Japan, medical, beauty and health product advertising is regulated by the Medical Advertising Guidelines, the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act and the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations. Check the current guidelines and rewrite AI copy before it goes live. Treat AI output as a draft you will put into your own words.

What the free demo gives you

  • 01A working demoA demo site you can open and click through on a computer and a phone.
  • 02A structure proposalWhich pages you need, what goes on each and where visitors get in touch.
  • 03Plan and estimateAfter you have seen the demo you get the plan to launch and an estimate.

Why it is safe to ask

  • The demo is free. If you decide not to go ahead, it costs you nothing.
  • Everything happens by message, in Japanese or English.
  • Your domain, hosting, ad and analytics accounts stay in your name.
  • The founder handles your project from the first demo to growth after launch – one contact all the way.

Five signs your website builder is no longer enough

A site that started on a builder often outgrows it as the business grows. When several of these apply, it is time to rethink how the site is built.

  • The site still looks like its template and resembles competitors' sites
  • More pages have made the structure confusing for visitors
  • You need English pages, booking or payments beyond what the tool handles well
  • You want better search visibility or speed, but the tool exposes few settings
  • Updating the site eats time that should go into the business itself

Keep in mind that sites built on Wix or STUDIO usually cannot be exported as-is to another service. If you are thinking of switching, save your page text and images now so the move goes smoothly. To weigh building it yourself against hiring help, read DIY website or agency.

Still undecided? Compare a tool with a professional demo

Seeing a finished site settles the question faster than another comparison table. Before you commit to anything, UNANOBO builds a free demo site based on your brand and content, so you can set it next to what you would build yourself with a tool and decide calmly.

At the demo stage we also suggest the platform that suits whoever will edit the site – WordPress, Shopify, BASE or another option. The process is free demo, feedback, launch, growth, and the founder handles every project personally, so you keep one contact from the first demo to improvements after launch. Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English. Learn more about the free website demo.

FAQ

Does the free demo cost anything?

No. The demo is free. We build a working site from your logo, colors and the content of your current site or social accounts, and you decide whether to continue after seeing it.

What if I see the demo and decide to build it myself with a tool?

That is completely fine, and there is no charge. If comparing the two makes it clear which approach suits you, the demo has done its job.

Can you move my site off Wix or STUDIO?

Yes. We carry over your text and images and rebuild the site on a new platform. These tools usually do not allow a direct export, so content is reorganized as it moves. If you own your domain, you can keep using it.

How long until I see the demo?

We reply to every inquiry within two business days. Demo build time depends on the site, so you get an estimate in our first exchange. If you have a deadline, let us know.

What should I prepare?

Your current site or social media links, your logo files and a short description of your services are enough to start. Two or three sites you like help us match the design direction quickly. Final copy and photos can come later.

Can we work together remotely, in English or Japanese?

Yes. Everything runs by message, in either language. There are no calls to schedule, so you can reply whenever it suits you.
