Free website mockup in Japan – compare free builders with a demo of your own site

Many businesses want to get a website without spending money, or at least see it before paying anything. Free site builders, "zero upfront" web packages and a studio's free mockup all sound similar, yet what you end up owning and paying later is very different. This page compares the three, gives you a checklist for each, and explains why UNANOBO starts every project with a free demo built around your own brand.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

Three ways to get a website for free in Japan

Search for a free website in Japan and you will see very different offers side by side. Start by asking two questions: what exactly is free, and what do you keep?

  • Free site builders: free plans of Wix, Jimdo, Ameba Ownd and similar tools. You pick a template and build the site yourself, so the cost is your time
  • "Zero upfront" web packages: no setup fee, but a monthly charge for a fixed term. The contract terms matter more than the price tag
  • A studio's free mockup: a sample site built from your own information and brand before you hire anyone. You decide after seeing it

Each fits a different situation. A one-page placeholder you need this week is a job for a builder. A site that should bring inquiries or bookings is worth seeing as a mockup first, then commissioning.

What free website builders do well – and their limits

Free builders are fast: with text and a few photos you can publish the same day. Their free plans share some limits that become noticeable once the site is part of your business.

  • The builder's ads or logo usually appear on your pages
  • The address is a subdomain such as yourname.wixsite.com; a custom domain usually needs a paid plan
  • Page counts, storage, forms and online selling are capped
  • Templates look alike, and the structure and copy are entirely up to you
  • Moving to another platform later often means rebuilding the design and content

For testing an idea this is plenty. When brand impression and search visibility start to matter, a paid plan or a professional build becomes the better option. Our website builder comparison covers the main tools in detail.

Contract terms to check in "zero upfront" web deals

Packages with no setup fee recover the build cost through monthly payments. They can work well, but depending on the contract the total can end up high or the deal hard to leave. Get these points in writing before you sign:

  • Term and exit fees: the minimum period, the cost of leaving early, and whether it is a lease contract
  • Total cost: monthly fee times the term, compared with a typical one-off build price
  • Domain ownership: whether you keep the same domain after cancelling
  • Design and content: whether you receive the site files when the contract ends
  • Included updates: how many changes per month the fee covers

If the domain is registered in the provider's name, cancelling can cost you both your URL and your email addresses. Whatever route you take, keep the domain and analytics accounts in your own name.

What the free demo gives you

  • 01A working demoA demo site you can open and click through on a computer and a phone.
  • 02A structure proposalWhich pages you need, what goes on each and where visitors get in touch.
  • 03Plan and estimateAfter you have seen the demo you get the plan to launch and an estimate.

Why it is safe to ask

  • The demo is free. If you decide not to go ahead, it costs you nothing.
  • Everything happens by message, in Japanese or English.
  • Your domain, hosting, ad and analytics accounts stay in your name.
  • The founder handles your project from the first demo to growth after launch – one contact all the way.

Demo sites we built

Template demos with fictional brands. Yours is built with your own brand and content.

Build it yourself or hire a studio? A quick test

Price alone is a poor way to make this call. The more of these points apply to you, the more a professional build saves you time and effort overall:

  • You want the site to bring inquiries, bookings or sales
  • You compete on brand and need to stand out next to rivals
  • You want your business to appear in Google results and AI answers
  • Your main work leaves no time to plan pages and write copy
  • Online sales, ads or a second language are on your roadmap

For a short-lived event page or a placeholder before opening, a free builder may be all you need. For typical budgets and the steps of a professional build, see website production and how to order a website.

How to get the most out of a free mockup

A free mockup lets you judge a studio by real work before you commit. A little preparation makes it far more specific.

  • What to send: links to your current site, social accounts or Google Maps listing, your logo and a few photos
  • What to explain: who the site is for and the one action you want more of – inquiries, bookings or purchases
  • References: two or three sites whose feel you like
  • What to look at: readability on a phone, a natural path to the main button, whether it feels like your brand
  • What to ask: what is needed to launch, who updates the site and how, and the expected cost and timeline

After you see it, a short note on what works and what feels off is all the feedback needed. Comparing mockups from more than one studio is also a fair way to choose.

UNANOBO's free demo: see your own site, then decide

Every UNANOBO project starts with a free demo. Using the information, logo and colors you send, we build a working website designed around your brand and the way your customers choose. You click through it on your computer and phone and decide whether to go ahead once you like it.

The process is free demo, feedback, launch, growth. The founder handles every project personally, so you keep one contact from the first demo to marketing after launch. Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English, and the site is built on whatever suits the person updating it – WordPress, Shopify or BASE.

FAQ

Is the demo really free?

Yes, building the demo costs nothing. After you have seen it, you receive a structure proposal, a plan and an estimate. The project starts only if you are happy with them.

What happens if I decide not to go ahead?

Just tell us. There is no fee and no pressure afterwards. Anything you noticed in the demo is yours to use if you build the site yourself.

I already made a site with a free builder. Can you still help?

Yes. We can base the demo on your current site and look at whether to upgrade within the same builder or move to WordPress or Shopify. If you own a domain, we explain how to keep it.

How long does the demo take?

It depends on the number of pages and the structure. We reply to every inquiry within two business days and, based on what you sent, give you a delivery estimate then.

What do I need to prepare?

Your business name, a link to your current site or social accounts, and your logo are enough to start. If copy or photos are not ready, we use placeholders to show the structure first and send you a list of missing materials after the demo.

Does it work if we only communicate remotely?

Yes. Communication runs by message, in Japanese or English. The demo arrives as a link, so you can review it whenever it suits you and reply with feedback.
