WordPress theme customization service – tailor your theme and keep updates safe

Most WordPress owners want the same two things: a theme that finally looks like their brand, and the freedom to click "Update" without the site breaking. Both are possible when changes follow the way WordPress themes are built. This page covers what customization can do, how to keep it update-safe, how a project runs and what to prepare – and how UNANOBO shows you the customized design as a free demo before you decide.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

What WordPress customization can do for your site

Customization keeps your current theme, content and URLs and improves only what is missing. It usually costs less and moves faster than a full rebuild. Typical requests include:

  • Design tuning: brand colors, fonts, headings and buttons that match your logo
  • Layout changes: a reworked home page, service and pricing sections, a clearer path to inquiries
  • Mobile fixes: text size, menus, spacing and images that overflow
  • New features: booking or contact forms, news lists, custom post types for cases or menus
  • Easier editing: block patterns for the layouts your team uses most
  • Speed and tracking: lighter images, fewer plugins, GA4 and tag setup

Take screenshots and mark what you want changed. That makes it easy to separate what the theme settings can handle from what needs code.

Before you customize a premium theme

Premium themes – popular ones in Japan include SWELL, Snow Monkey and the TCD series – already let you change a lot from the admin panel. A few checks before any code is written save time and prevent surprises:

  • Built-in options first: anything the Customizer or the theme's own blocks can do needs no code and survives updates
  • License terms: who owns the license, whether it covers more than one site, and the rules on modification
  • Update history: a theme that has not been updated for years may fall behind WordPress core and PHP
  • Child theme: whether the vendor provides one and whether it is already installed
  • Plugins in use: page builders and all-in-one plugins often overlap with theme features and cause layout conflicts

If the theme is abandoned or the structure itself needs rethinking, a new build may be the faster route. Our page on choosing a WordPress web design company helps you weigh that choice.

How to customize WordPress so updates stay safe

Edits made directly in theme files are overwritten the moment the theme updates. Skipping updates leaves security holes, so changes belong outside the parent theme:

  • Use a child theme: the parent keeps updating, while design and template changes live in the child
  • Keep CSS in one place: Additional CSS or the child theme's style.css, so every change is traceable
  • Add features with hooks or a small plugin: functions.php edits go in the child theme; site features go in a dedicated plugin so they survive a theme switch
  • Test on staging first: check layouts and forms on a copy of the site before touching production
  • Back up before work: files and database saved, ready to restore
  • Log every change: what changed and in which file, so the next person can pick it up

Set up this way, you can keep updating the theme, WordPress core and plugins as usual. If you would rather hand off updates entirely, see WordPress maintenance.

How a customization project runs and what to prepare

CSS adjustments typically take a few days; template work or new features take a few weeks. Costs in Japan vary just as widely – typically from a few thousand yen for small fixes to several hundred thousand for a reworked home page with new features. The steps:

  • Audit: theme and version, child theme, plugins, PHP version
  • Scope: list the changes and split them into settings and code work
  • Design check: review the new look on desktop and mobile and agree on direction
  • Build on staging: changes go into the child theme or a plugin, then get tested
  • Go live: back up, deploy, then check forms and tracking tags

It helps to have ready: admin and hosting logins, the theme name and purchase account, screenshots of what to change and two or three sites you like. Create a separate admin account for the work so you can delete it afterwards.

Common WordPress customization mistakes

Most customization problems come from skipped steps. These are all preventable:

  • Editing the parent theme directly, then losing everything on the next update
  • Working on the live site and hitting an error that turns it into a blank page
  • Adding a plugin for every feature until the site is slow and breaks after updates
  • Relying so heavily on a page builder that the theme or builder can never be changed
  • Keeping no record of changes, so nobody else can work on the site

After customization, text and photos still need regular updates. If your team is short on time, our website update service can take that on.

How UNANOBO customizes WordPress: a free demo first

Before you commit, UNANOBO builds a free demo of your site with the customizations applied, based on your current content and theme. You click through it on your computer and phone and decide once you like the direction. The real work then happens in a child theme on staging, so you can keep updating safely.

The process is simple: free demo, feedback, launch, growth. The founder handles every project personally, so you keep one contact from the first demo to improvements after launch. Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English.

FAQ

Is the demo really free?

Yes. Send your site address and the changes you have in mind, and we build a demo of the customized design. If you decide not to go ahead after seeing it, there is no cost.

Can I keep my current premium theme?

In most cases, yes. We use the theme's own settings first and fill the gaps with a child theme and CSS. If the theme has stopped receiving updates, we will suggest options, including moving to another theme.

Can I still update the theme after customization?

Yes. Changes live in a child theme or a dedicated plugin and the parent theme stays untouched, so updates work as usual. For major updates, checking on staging first is the safest habit.

How long does it take?

Design tweaks usually take a few days to a week; a reworked home page or new features take a few weeks. The scope is set during the demo stage, and you get a concrete schedule.

What do I need to prepare?

To start, just your site address and notes or screenshots of what to change. Admin and hosting logins and theme purchase details are needed only once the actual work begins.

Does working remotely by message work well?

Yes. All communication runs by message, in Japanese or English. You receive the demo as a link and review it whenever it suits you, and replies come within two business days.
