What AI search optimization means: SEO, AIO and LLMO

AI search optimization is the work of making your site a source that search engines and AI assistants refer to – and name – when they answer a question. The terms vary, but three layers keep it clear:

  • SEO: the foundation – pages that are crawled, indexed and ranked by Google and Bing, with useful content and clear internal links
  • AIO: getting cited in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode
  • LLMO: helping large language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot describe and recommend your brand correctly

Most of what AI tools quote comes from pages that search engines have already indexed. So there is no secret trick: you secure the SEO foundation first and then shape content so AI can lift it cleanly. Google itself says no special optimization is required for AI Overviews beyond standard SEO best practices. For the specific methods, see AIO optimization and LLMO optimization.

What is changing, and signs you should start now

With AI summarizing at the top of the page, many people finish comparing options before visiting any site. For questions like "best ... in Osaka" or "difference between X and Y", being named in the AI answer decides whether you make the shortlist. These signs suggest it is time to act:

  • Rankings look stable, yet clicks in Search Console keep falling
  • Asking ChatGPT or Gemini about your company returns outdated facts or another business
  • Questions with your industry and area list competitors and never you
  • Services and pricing logic only appear inside images or PDFs
  • Company name, address or founder details differ across your pages

Start by asking the main AI assistants about your brand, your services and "area + industry", and save the answers. That becomes your baseline.

How to write pages AI likes to cite

AI tools pull the passage that answers the question most directly. Pages that are easy for people to scan are also easy for AI to quote. When reviewing a page, check these points:

  • Answer first: give the answer in one or two sentences right under the heading
  • Use question-style headings: phrase them the way customers actually ask
  • Be specific in text: service area, hours, what you handle, steps and typical timeframes
  • Structure comparisons: use lists or tables for differences, fit and selection criteria
  • Show who is behind it: about page, founder profile, expertise and update dates
  • Build a real FAQ: publish the questions customers send you, with clear answers

Keep your details consistent off-site too – Google Business Profile, social accounts and industry directories – so AI sees one coherent brand.

Demo sites we built

Template demos with fictional brands. Yours is built with your own brand and content.

Technical groundwork: crawling, structured data, tracking

Great content only gets cited if crawlers can read it. On the technical side, check the following:

  • Indexing: confirm key pages are indexed in Search Console; ChatGPT search also draws on Bing, so register with Bing Webmaster Tools
  • robots.txt: make sure you are not blocking search crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot or OAI-SearchBot by mistake
  • Structured data: add schema.org markup that fits each page – Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Product, Article
  • Speed and mobile: trim heavy images and scripts so the main text loads fast on a phone
  • Tracking: set up GA4 so referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar services are visible

Proposals such as llms.txt exist, but major AI providers have not committed to using them. Get the basics above right first and adopt new standards as they mature.

Running SEO and AI search as one plan

Treating AI search as a separate project tends to duplicate work and leave pages written in different styles. Build AIO and LLMO into your SEO plan and follow this order:

  • Baseline: record rankings, Search Console clicks and how AI tools describe you
  • Questions: list what customers ask before buying, while comparing and after purchase
  • Page mapping: assign each question to one page; create missing pages, merge overlapping ones
  • Rewrite and mark up: answer first, clear headings, FAQ and structured data
  • Align off-site info: make your profiles and listings match
  • Review monthly: re-ask the same questions, check traffic and update content

A common mistake is mass-producing short, keyword-stuffed articles for AI. A smaller number of genuinely useful pages with first-hand detail performs better in search and AI alike. For the wider picture, see our SEO services page.

FAQ

How is AI search optimization different from regular SEO?

The foundation is the same: pages must be crawled, indexed and valued by search engines. AI search optimization adds answer-first structure, question-based headings, clear authorship and structured data so AI can extract the key points. That is why it works best as part of one SEO plan.

Does the free demo cost anything, and what if I don't continue?

The demo is free. If you decide not to go ahead after seeing it, there is no charge. If you do continue, you receive a plan and an estimate after the demo.

How long until we see results?

Search engines often take a few weeks to reflect page updates, and AI answers can take longer to change. Results are typically judged over months by comparing rankings, clicks and how AI tools describe you. No specific timing or position can be promised.

What should we prepare?

Your site URL is enough to start. If you use Search Console or GA4, sharing view access gives a more accurate picture. A list of questions customers often ask is especially useful for the FAQ and page structure.

Does it work remotely, by message only?

Yes. Everything runs by message in Japanese or English, with replies within two business days. Demos and drafts arrive as links you can review whenever it suits you, and Search Console, GA4 and other accounts stay in your name.

Can you work on sites that are not WordPress?

Yes. Besides WordPress, we work on Shopify and BASE stores – headings, product descriptions, FAQ and structured data. Each platform allows different edits, so the demo stage makes clear what is possible on yours.
