AI Overviews optimization – how to get your site cited by Google's AI

Google now places an AI-written answer above the regular results, and many sites see the same rankings with fewer clicks. AI Overviews optimization (often called AIO in Japan) is about becoming one of the sources that answer links to. This page covers what makes a page citable, how to write and structure content for it, how to make Google understand who you are, and how to measure the effect.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

  • Structured data and business info plan
  • A summary of where AI cites you today

A phone number or an email address is enough – whichever suits you.

What AI Overviews optimization means

AI Overviews summarize an answer to a search query and show links to the pages the summary draws on. AI Mode goes further: people ask follow-up questions in a conversation, and it is available in Japanese as well. Both pick their sources from pages Google has already indexed.

Google says there is no special markup or trick required to appear in its AI features. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal search. So AI Overviews optimization builds on solid SEO and then makes it easy for the AI to decide that your page is the right answer for a given question.

  • Source links: cited pages appear as cards or links next to or under the answer
  • Question types: "what is", "how to choose", "X vs Y" and other research queries trigger it most
  • Brand searches: a search for your company name can also produce an AI summary of your business

Start by searching your main services and the questions customers ask you most. Note where an AI answer appears and which sites it cites – that list is your baseline.

Signs your site is hard for AI to cite

Whether a page gets cited depends heavily on how clearly its content can be read. These issues make good pages easy to skip:

  • Services or pricing explained only inside images, with no real text
  • One page mixing several topics, so the headings do not say what it is about
  • No FAQ and few passages that answer customer questions directly
  • Company name, address, owner or contact details that differ across the site
  • Articles with no author or date, so readers cannot tell how current they are
  • Many pages missing from the index in Search Console, or very slow loading

The more of these you tick, the clearer the improvement will be once they are fixed. For ChatGPT, Perplexity and other AI tools outside Google, see LLMO optimization, and for the wider picture, AI search optimization.

How many of these apply to your site?

Content: answers AI can quote

The most effective change is writing that answers questions directly. The AI looks for short, self-contained explanations it can use in its summary, so put the answer right under the heading and add reasons and conditions after it.

  • Phrase headings as questions: match the words people actually search, such as "How much does X usually cost?"
  • Answer in the first two or three sentences: skip the warm-up and state the conclusion and its conditions
  • Add specifics: steps, time needed, selection criteria, who it suits and who it does not
  • Use lists and comparisons: steps and differences in a list are easy to extract
  • Include first-hand experience: questions you hear every week and mistakes you see, which no rewrite of other sites can offer
  • Date what changes: prices and rules should show when they were last checked

Before adding many new pages, rewrite the existing pages that already bring inquiries. Listing ten questions customers have actually sent you by email or asked on the phone usually gives you the headings you need.

Structure and entity signals

AI systems also need to confirm who is behind the information. Google understands companies, shops, people and products as entities and cross-checks what your site says with other sources. The more consistent that picture is, the more accurately your brand is described in brand searches and AI answers.

  • Structured data: Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article, BreadcrumbList and others, always matching what is visible on the page
  • Consistent business details: the same name, address, phone and hours across the site and your Google Business Profile
  • External links to you: official social accounts, partners and media mentions connected with your site
  • Visible authors: writer or reviewer names with a short background and a profile page
  • Clear site structure: one page per service, breadcrumbs and internal links that show how pages relate
  • Technical checks: important pages not blocked by robots.txt or noindex, fast loading on mobile

Structured data alone does not decide citations, but it helps machines read the meaning of a page precisely. Our structured data guide explains each type and how to test it.

Measuring results and common mistakes

Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted inside the regular "Web" search data in Search Console, with no separate AI filter. In practice you combine several views:

  • Compare impressions, clicks and queries for the improved pages month by month in Search Console
  • Keep a list of key questions and check regularly whether AI answers cite your site
  • Use GA4 to see which pages lead to inquiries or sales, and fix those first
  • Try the same questions in Perplexity and other AI search tools to compare which sources they pick

Typical mistakes are mass-producing similar articles for AI, hiding keywords on the page and adding structured data for content that is not visible. All of these go against Google's guidelines and can hurt the whole site. Because search engines decide what appears, no one can promise a citation. Steadily building pages that genuinely help readers is the most reliable path.

How UNANOBO handles AI Overviews optimization

We start by reviewing your current site and its main search queries, then build a free demo of pages reworked to be easy for AI to cite: question-led headings, answer-first copy, structured data and consistent business details. You see the result on a real screen before deciding anything.

The process is free demo, feedback, launch, growth. The founder handles every project personally, so you keep one contact from the first demo to improvements after launch, and everything runs by message in Japanese or English. After launch we track Search Console and the AI answers themselves, and keep refining the pages.

FAQ

Do I need AIO and SEO separately?

They share the same foundation. AI Overviews choose sources from indexed pages, so being properly indexed comes first. AIO adds answer-first writing and entity signals on top, and it works best as one improvement plan.

Will my site definitely appear in AI Overviews?

No one can guarantee that, because Google decides what appears. Even whether an AI answer shows at all varies by query and over time. We build the conditions that make citations likely and keep improving based on Search Console data and real search results.

What does the free demo include, and does it cost anything?

The demo is free. We rework your key pages with question-led structure, answer-first copy and clear business information, and you check them on a computer and phone. If you decide not to go ahead, there is no cost at all.

How long until we see changes?

After pages are updated, search engines need to recrawl and reassess them, which typically takes a few weeks to a few months. It also depends on the number of pages and the competition. We fix the pages that drive inquiries first and compare results month by month.

What do I need to prepare?

Your site address and a few questions customers often ask are enough to start. If you use Search Console or GA4, read-only access makes the analysis more specific. All accounts stay in your name.

Can this work entirely by message, with you abroad?

Yes. What you review is the demo and the improvement plan, so no meetings in person are needed. We communicate by message in Japanese or English and usually reply within two business days.
