Google Business Profile management in Japan – from setup to review replies
When someone looks up your business on Google Maps, your Google Business Profile is the first thing they see. Outdated hours, a handful of dark photos or reviews left unanswered are enough to send them to the shop next door. This page explains what Google Business Profile management covers, how setup and verification work, how to keep the profile active month to month, and how UNANOBO approaches it.
- Free demo – decide after you see it

What Google Business Profile management covers
It helps to split the work into a one-time setup and ongoing upkeep. The exact tasks depend on your business, but a typical scope looks like this:
- Setup and verification: creating the profile or claiming an existing one, then verifying ownership with the method Google offers
- Core information: categories, regular and holiday hours, address, phone, website, booking link, attributes and description
- Photos: logo, exterior, interior, products or menu, and team photos, refreshed with the seasons
- Posts: new menu items, seasonal news, events and offers on a regular schedule
- Reviews: replying to new reviews and reporting the ones that break Google's policies
- Performance: a monthly look at searches, direction requests, calls and website clicks
Setup is done once and thoroughly; posts, photos and review replies are the monthly routine. Open your own profile now and note which of these items are still empty.
What happens when a profile is left alone
Customers and Google itself can suggest edits to your profile, so details can change while nobody is watching. If any of these sound familiar, the profile is worth a review:
- Holiday hours are missing and people arrive while you are closed
- Only customer photos show, and the top ones are dark or show an old interior
- Reviews from months ago have no reply, and a few low ratings stand out
- The profile sits in a former employee's or agency's account, and nobody is sure who owns it
- Extra keywords or the city name were added to the business name, which breaks Google's guidelines and risks suspension
- The website link or phone number is out of date
Ownership matters most. Keep your own Google account as the owner and add any agency as a manager. If you change providers later, you simply remove their access.

How to set up and verify a Google Business Profile
Creating a profile is free with a Google account. Until it is verified, though, you cannot fully edit it or reply to reviews, so the first steps deserve care.
- Check for an existing profile: search your business on Google Maps first. If one exists, request ownership instead of creating a duplicate
- Enter your details: the real business name, primary category, address (or service area for businesses that visit customers), phone and website
- Verify: by postcard, phone, email or video, depending on what Google offers your business. For video, film your signage, interior and work tools in one continuous take
- Complete the profile: add hours, photos, description and attributes, then check how it looks on a phone
Use the same name and address format as on your signage, website and listing sites, so Google can match them to one business. Verification options vary and change over time, so follow the instructions shown in your dashboard.

Optimization and monthly upkeep: posts, photos and reviews
Optimizing a Google Business Profile comes down to keeping it accurate, specific and fresh. These habits make the monthly routine manageable:
- Categories: choose one primary category for your core business and add secondary ones for the rest
- Description: say what you do, who it is for and what makes you different, in the order a first-time visitor needs it
- Photos: shoot the exterior so the entrance is easy to recognize, and add interior, menu and work shots each season
- Posts: a few times a month, with a photo – new products, events, closures
- Review replies: thank people with a specific line; for critical reviews, check the facts first and reply calmly
- Common questions: Google has been changing how Q&A appears, so put answers about parking or booking in your description and on your website FAQ as well
Be careful when asking for reviews. Offering discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews breaks Google's policies, and in Japan it can also fall under the stealth marketing rules of the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations. Share a review link at checkout or in a booking confirmation and leave it there. For visibility in map search overall, see MEO services; for combining your profile with your website, see local SEO.

What to check before hiring a management service
Services vary widely in scope and pricing. Ask these questions before you sign:
- Does ownership of the profile stay in your name?
- Is the monthly work defined – number of posts, photo updates, which reviews get replies?
- Do they promise a top position? Rankings are decided by Google, so treat that as a warning sign
- Do they suggest fake reviews or rewards for reviews?
- Will a monthly report show searches, calls and direction requests over time?
- If you cancel, do your photos and posts stay on the profile?
Costs depend mainly on whether you need a one-off setup or ongoing monthly management. Typical ranges and how they are built are covered in MEO pricing.
How UNANOBO manages your profile: together with your website
Most people who find you on Google Maps tap through to your website next, to check the menu, prices or how to book. So UNANOBO starts by building a free demo of a store website in your brand, and shows how the path from your profile to the site and on to a booking or inquiry will work on a real screen.
The process is free demo, feedback, launch, growth. After the demo you get a list of improvements for your profile, a management plan and an estimate. The founder handles everything personally – setup, verification, monthly posts and review replies – and all communication runs by message in Japanese or English. Your business stays the owner of the profile; we work with manager access.

FAQ
Is the free demo really free?
Yes. Send us your business name, your Google Maps link and your current website if you have one, and we build a demo store site in your brand. If you decide not to continue, you pay nothing.
Can you help if we are not on Google Business Profile yet?
Yes. We first check whether a profile already exists on Google Maps and create a new one only if it does not. If verification needs a video, you get a short list of what to film beforehand.
Can we get back a profile a previous agency created?
In most cases you can request ownership from the dashboard. If the current owner does not respond within the set period, Google offers its own verification path. The steps depend on the situation, so we look at your profile first and then guide you.
Can you remove bad reviews?
No owner or agency can delete reviews at will. Reviews that break Google's policies, such as abuse or unrelated content, can be reported. For the rest, we check the facts and reply politely, so other customers see a business that responds with care.
How much of our time will this take each month?
Mostly sharing news, new menu items and photos, and confirming facts when a review needs them. Send these by message and we write and publish the posts.
Does it work with someone outside Japan?
Yes. Profile management happens entirely in Google's dashboard, so it runs smoothly remotely. Everything is by message in Japanese or English, with replies within two business days. You take the photos on site, and we send tips on what and how to shoot.
