Structured data implementation – help search engines and AI understand your site

Structured data labels the key facts on your pages – company name, address, prices, page hierarchy – in a format search engines can read without guessing. Because it is invisible to visitors, it is easy to forget, and many sites carry broken or outdated markup for years. This page covers which schema types to prioritize, how JSON-LD implementation works, the mistakes to avoid, and how UNANOBO builds structured data into your site from the free demo onward.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

Send us your current site address. We check your existing markup and show you a free demo with structured data implemented correctly – then you decide.

  • A check of missing and broken markup
  • A list of schema types for each page
  • Working pages to try on computer and phone

A phone number or an email address is enough – whichever suits you.

What structured data is: name tags for machines

A person looking at your page can tell the shop name from the opening hours at a glance. Search engines and AI systems infer meaning from text, and the busier the page, the more room for error. Structured data uses the shared schema.org vocabulary to tag each fact: this is the company name, this is the price including tax, this item is in stock.

Google recommends JSON-LD, a separate block of code that sits alongside your HTML. You can add or fix it without touching the design or copy, which makes it easy to retrofit on an existing site.

  • Business details: company name, logo, address, phone, opening hours, social profiles
  • For online stores: product name, price, currency, availability, brand, images
  • Site structure: the path from the home page to the current page (breadcrumbs)

A quick first step: paste your URL into Google's Rich Results Test and see what it detects. If nothing shows up, or you get errors, there is work to do.

Where structured data helps in SEO and AI search

The value of structured data lies in how your pages appear and how well they are understood. Eligible pages can show as rich results with price, availability, ratings or breadcrumbs, which take up more space and carry more information in search.

The second role is preparing for AI answers and summaries. When your official name, location and products are available in machine-readable form, search engines and AI tools can connect them to your business with more confidence. Our page on AI search optimization covers the wider picture.

  • Your product pages list prices and stock, but search results show none of it
  • Searching your company name does not bring up your logo or correct details
  • You changed theme or plugins and never checked the markup afterwards
  • Search Console shows errors or warnings under Enhancements that nobody has fixed

If any of these apply, open the Enhancements reports in Search Console and note which pages are missing which fields. That list becomes your priority order.

Which schema types to prioritize for your site

Schema.org has hundreds of types, and you only need a handful. Focus on the ones Google actually uses in search results, then pick what fits your site's purpose.

  • Organization / LocalBusiness: the foundation for every site. Name, logo, contact details, address. Clinics, salons and shops should use a specific LocalBusiness type such as Dentist or HairSalon and include opening hours
  • BreadcrumbList: describes page hierarchy; most useful on sites with many inner pages
  • Product: for store product pages. Price, availability, images and brand, matching exactly what the page shows
  • Article / BlogPosting: for blog posts and news. Headline, publish and update dates, author
  • WebSite: states your site name, which Google may use as the site name in results
  • FAQPage: for FAQ content. FAQ rich results are now shown only for a limited set of well-known, authoritative government and health sites

For a company site, Organization, WebSite and BreadcrumbList are the core set; an online store adds Product. FAQ markup can still help describe your content, but treat it as a lower priority.

Demo sites we built

Template demos with fictional brands. Yours is built with your own brand and content.

How structured data implementation works, step by step

Markup is set per template, so the workload depends on how many templates you have, regardless of page count. This order keeps gaps to a minimum:

  • Audit: list the markup your theme and plugins already output; find duplicates and conflicts
  • Map types: decide which type goes on the home page, about page, products, articles and categories
  • Write JSON-LD: use the same values the page displays, covering required and recommended fields
  • Test: run the Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator to catch errors and warnings
  • Monitor: check Search Console Enhancements reports regularly for drops or new errors

On WordPress, SEO plugins output basic markup automatically, and many Shopify themes include product markup. It is often incomplete, though, and we regularly see the theme and a plugin both emitting the same type. For Shopify specifics, see Shopify SEO.

Common structured data mistakes to avoid

Markup must follow Google's guidelines. Pages that break them can lose rich result eligibility or, in serious cases, receive a manual action. Check these points in particular:

  • Prices or ratings appear in the markup but nowhere on the visible page
  • Old sale prices or "in stock" remain after the offer has ended
  • Self-collected review stars are added to your own Organization or LocalBusiness markup
  • Breadcrumb markup does not match the breadcrumb trail shown on screen
  • A template update removed a required field and the errors went unnoticed

Even perfect markup does not guarantee rich results – Google decides when to show them. That is why accurate, up-to-date markup that matches the page matters so much. For speed, indexing and the rest of the technical base, see technical SEO.

How UNANOBO handles structured data: built in from the demo

When UNANOBO builds your free demo – a new site or an improved version of your current one – structured data such as Organization, breadcrumbs and Product is part of the design from the start. Along with the working pages, you get a list of which schema type goes on which page, so you understand the setup before deciding whether to go ahead.

The process is simple: free demo, feedback, launch, growth. The founder handles every project personally, from the first demo to checking Search Console after launch, so you keep one contact throughout. Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English.

FAQ

Does the free demo cost anything?

No. Building the demo is free, and if you decide not to continue after seeing it, there is nothing to pay. If you go ahead, you receive a plan and estimate after the demo.

Can you add structured data to my current site without rebuilding it?

Yes. JSON-LD sits separately from the design and copy, so it can be added to an existing WordPress or Shopify site. We start by reviewing the markup your site already outputs and cleaning up duplicates and errors.

Will structured data guarantee rich results?

No one can guarantee that. Google decides whether to show rich results, and it varies by query. We take care of accurate, guideline-compliant markup and monitor errors after launch.

Does structured data work on a BASE shop?

BASE templates control what markup is output, so there is limited room to customize it. If you want full control, Shopify or WordPress with WooCommerce is a better fit. We recommend one based on your product range and who will update the store.

How long does it take, and what do I need to prepare?

For an existing site, a few days to about two weeks is typical, depending on the number of templates. Have your official company name, address, phone number, opening hours, logo file and social profile URLs ready. If you share Search Console access, we can also handle the checks after launch.

Can we work entirely by message if I am not in Japan?

Yes. Everything from the first inquiry to post-launch improvements runs by message, in Japanese or English, and you get a reply within two business days. Search Console and other accounts stay in your name.
