Web design company in Japan – test the fit with a free demo first

Japan has thousands of web design companies, from large agencies to small studios and solo freelancers, and each works differently. Portfolios and quotes only tell you so much; whether a partner suits you usually becomes clear once you start working together. This page compares the main types of providers, lists what to check and what websites typically cost, and explains why UNANOBO begins every project with a free demo.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

Test the fit with a free demo

Send your current site URL, or your logo and a short description of your business. We build a free demo site in your brand that you can use to compare providers.

  • See real screens before signing anything
  • Compare it side by side with other quotes
  • Experience how we work before you commit

A phone number or an email address is enough – whichever suits you.

Three kinds of web design company and what each suits

The structure of a web design company shapes what it does well. Sorting your shortlist by type makes comparison much easier.

  • Large agencies and ad firms: separate directors, designers and engineers; strong on sites with hundreds of pages or many internal stakeholders. Solid project management, with budgets and timelines to match
  • Small studios: a few people handle everything from planning to post-launch work. A good fit for SMEs, shops and brand sites where you talk directly with the person building the site
  • Freelancers: individuals specializing in design or coding. Often the lowest cost, while scope and post-launch support vary a lot from person to person

If one person on your side owns the project and the goal is more inquiries or bookings, a small studio or a freelancer is usually the realistic choice. We compare the last two in detail in freelancer or agency for your website.

Where hiring a web agency usually goes wrong

Most regrets trace back to expectations that were never aligned before signing. Common examples include:

  • The cheapest quote won, then copywriting, photos and mobile layout turned out to be extras
  • A sales rep ran the meetings and a different person built the site, so the intent got lost
  • The first design took weeks to appear and was hard to change once it did
  • The domain and hosting were registered in the agency's name, which made switching painful
  • Monthly maintenance fees were higher than expected, with no way to edit the site yourself

Each of these is easy to prevent if you ask three things up front: who will work on the project, what the price includes, and when you will see real screens. The checklist below turns that into questions you can send to every candidate.

A checklist for comparing web design companies

Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and the differences become obvious. Set design taste aside for a moment and compare these points:

  • Contact: is the same person your contact from the first call to after launch?
  • Scope: are structure, copy, photos, mobile layout, forms and basic SEO included?
  • Preview: can you see real screens before signing or right after kickoff?
  • CMS: do they suggest a platform your team can update, such as WordPress, Shopify or BASE?
  • Ownership: will the domain, hosting and GA4 accounts be in your name?
  • After launch: can they handle updates, maintenance, SEO, MEO and ads?
  • Communication: message, phone or video – does it match how you work, and in which language?

For a deeper guide, see how to choose a web design agency. Of all the points, an early look at real screens does the most to prevent surprises at the end.

Typical website costs in Japan and how to read a quote

Price depends on the type of provider, the number of pages and the features. As a general guide, a company site of around ten pages typically costs a few hundred thousand yen with a freelancer, from several hundred thousand to over a million yen with a small or mid-sized studio, and several million yen or more with a large agency. Online stores, booking systems and multiple languages add to that.

The breakdown matters more than the total. Check these lines in every quote:

  • Whether direction, design and coding are priced per page or as a package
  • Whether copywriting, photography or stock images are included
  • How many rounds of revisions are covered
  • What hosting, domain and maintenance cost each month or year

Some Japanese subsidies, such as the 小規模事業者持続化補助金 or IT導入補助金, can cover parts of a website project, but eligible costs, caps and rates change with every application round, so always check the latest official guidelines. Our guide to website quotes in Japan walks through each line item.

What to prepare before you contact anyone

Whichever company you choose, these materials make the first conversation faster and the quote more accurate. Start with whatever you have; it does not need to be complete.

  • Goal: inquiries, bookings, hiring or online sales – the one you most want more of
  • Materials: logo files, photos you like, a short description of your business
  • References: two or three sites you like, with a note on what you like about them
  • Current setup: where your domain and hosting are registered, plus your current site URL
  • Budget and timing: a rough ceiling and when you would like to launch

FAQ

Is the demo really free?

Yes. Building the demo costs nothing. It is a working site, centered on the home page, designed around your brand. You decide whether to continue after seeing it.

What if I decide not to go ahead?

That is completely fine. The demo comes with no fee and no obligation. Feel free to use it as a reference while you compare other companies.

Can a small studio handle a large website?

We focus on company sites, shop sites and online stores on Shopify or BASE – projects where we work directly with the decision maker. If a project needs hundreds of pages or approvals across many departments, we will tell you honestly at the first conversation.

Is it a problem that you work remotely from outside Japan?

Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English. Written communication keeps a clear record and lets you reply when it suits you. We answer every inquiry within two business days.

How long does the demo take and what do I need to send?

Timing depends on the site, and we give you an estimate when you get in touch. All we need is your current site URL or your logo and a short description of your business. Where photos are missing, we use placeholders to show the layout first.

Can you also handle updates and marketing after launch?

Yes. Updates, maintenance, SEO, MEO, Google Ads, Meta Ads and GA4 setup all run through the same single contact. If you prefer to edit the site yourself, you get guidance on the admin panel by message.
