Shopify GA4 setup – accurate purchase data for ads and SEO decisions
Shopify GA4 setup looks like a one-tag job, yet many stores count every purchase twice or lose the purchase event at checkout. With numbers like that, you cannot tell which products deserve ad budget or which pages to grow through SEO. This page walks through how to set up GA4 and GTM on Shopify so your data holds up all the way to the order, and what to check along the way.

What goes wrong when Shopify GA4 tracking is off
The tricky part is that reports still look plausible when the setup is broken. These are the problems we see most often:
- Double-counted purchases: the Google & YouTube app and a tag hard-coded in the theme both fire, so revenue looks about twice as high
- Missing purchases: add-to-cart is tracked, but the purchase event never arrives after checkout
- Lost sources: visitors returning from an external payment service are recorded as referrals, erasing the credit for ads and search
- Mismatched values: shipping, tax and discounts are handled inconsistently, so revenue differs widely from Shopify
- Short data retention: the default two months is still set, so year-on-year comparisons are impossible
Start with a simple check: place one test order and confirm it appears in GA4 Realtime once, with the right value. If it does not, read every other report with caution until it is fixed.
Why Shopify Analytics and Google Analytics never match exactly
Shopify has its own built-in analytics, and its numbers will differ from GA4. Shopify counts actual orders; GA4 counts events sent from the visitor's browser. The gap is built into the method.
- Ad blockers and browser tracking protection stop some events from reaching GA4
- If you ask for cookie consent, visitors who decline are not measured in GA4
- Cancellations and refunds update Shopify, while the GA4 purchase event stays
- Sessions and visitors are defined differently in each tool
A practical rule: treat Shopify orders as the source of truth for total revenue, and use GA4 to compare which traffic sources and pages lead to purchases. A gap of a few percent is normal; a large gap usually points to a setup problem.

Shopify GA4 setup, step by step
Today the standard route is Shopify's official Google & YouTube app. Once you connect your Google account and GA4 property, it sends the core ecommerce events automatically: page views, product views, add to cart, checkout started and purchase.
- Prepare the property: set the time zone to Japan and currency to JPY, and change data retention to 14 months
- Connect through the app: select your GA4 property in the Google & YouTube app and turn on the Google tag
- Remove old tags: delete gtag or analytics code pasted into theme.liquid and any older tracking apps
- List unwanted referrals: add external payment service domains to GA4's unwanted referrals list
- Check key events: confirm that purchase is marked as a key event (formerly a conversion)
- Test order: place a test order and verify value and items in DebugView and Realtime
If you want the GA4 property itself designed properly, our GA4 setup service page covers the settings shared by every type of website, shops included.

Shopify GTM versus customer events: which to use
Many store owners ask about Shopify GTM (Google Tag Manager). You can add GTM to your theme pages, but Shopify's checkout changes are phasing out the old ways of adding tags to checkout and the thank-you page, including theme code and "additional scripts". Tracking around checkout now runs through Customer events in the Shopify admin.
- App pixels: provided by official apps from Google, Meta, TikTok and others – enough for most stores
- Custom pixels: for your own tags or loading GTM. They run in an isolated sandbox for security, so tags that read page elements directly may not work
- Theme code: for tools that only need storefront pages, such as heatmaps
The key rule is one route per event. Sending purchase from both the app and GTM doubles it. For Google Ads, see conversion tracking setup, and for running ads on top of clean data, see ads for ecommerce stores.

FAQ
Does the free demo cost anything? What if I do not go ahead?
The demo is free. If you decide not to continue after seeing it, there is no charge. If you do continue, you get the scope and an estimate after the demo.
Can you fix tracking on a Shopify store that is already running?
Yes. We first review how tags are installed and how a test order is recorded in GA4, then send you a list of what needs fixing. Tracking can be cleaned up without changing your shop's design.
What should I prepare?
Your store URL, a staff account on your Shopify admin, and admin access to GA4 and Google Ads make things fast. If you do not have these accounts yet, we guide you through creating them in your own name.
How long does the setup take?
Fixing tracking on an existing store typically takes from a few days to about two weeks, including checks and test orders. Linking ad accounts or untangling several tracking tools can take a little longer.
Will GA4 revenue match Shopify exactly?
No – the two tools measure differently, so a perfect match is not possible. A proper setup removes the large gaps caused by double counting and missing events, so GA4 becomes reliable for comparing sources and products.
Can everything be done by message if I am not in Japan?
Yes. Granting access, sharing findings and checking test orders all happen by message. When you need to click something yourself, you get step-by-step instructions with screenshots in Japanese or English.
