What is a landing page – meaning, structure and how to build one

A landing page is a single page built to get visitors from an ad or a search result to take one specific action. Many business owners wonder whether they need one when they already have a website, and what it should contain. This guide covers what a landing page is, when it makes sense, how a converting page is structured and how to build one without wasted effort.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

What is a landing page? Two meanings and how it differs from a website

The term is used in two ways. In analytics, a landing page is simply the first page a visitor arrives on – the pages listed in the GA4 landing page report.

In marketing and web production, a landing page (often called an "LP" in Japan) is a long single page focused on one goal, such as a booking, a sign-up or an inquiry. When people talk about creating a landing page, they mean this second type.

  • Website: shows the full picture of your company or shop. Visitors move between pages through a menu to find what they need
  • Landing page: one page for one product, campaign or audience. Reading from top to bottom leads naturally to the sign-up

A landing page keeps navigation and outgoing links to a minimum so the reader stays focused. Try writing one sentence: who is this page for and what should they do? If that sentence comes easily, a landing page is probably a good fit.

When your business needs a landing page

Not every business needs one. A dedicated landing page pays off in situations like these:

  • You run Google Ads or Meta Ads. When the page matches the ad, fewer people leave right after clicking
  • You launch a new product or service, or a time-limited campaign
  • You speak to different audiences, such as businesses and consumers, and want a tailored message for each
  • You want more of one action: free trials, brochure requests or bookings
  • Your website holds so much information that your main service gets lost

In industries where customers check your background broadly before contacting you, a strong website often comes first. Two quick tests: do you plan to advertise, and can you name the single action you want more of?

The structure of a landing page that converts

A landing page works best when it answers the reader's questions in the order they come up. This basic flow fits almost any industry:

  • Hero: who it is for, what they get, and a clear call-to-action button
  • The problem: name the reader's situation and worries in concrete words
  • Solution and benefits: how your offer solves it, focused on about three points
  • Proof: how it works, materials, qualifications or process – support for your claims
  • How it works and terms: the steps from sign-up to use, how pricing and service areas work
  • FAQ: answer the doubts that usually stop people before they sign up
  • Closing: restate the outcome and end with a short, easy form or button

Place call-to-action buttons in the hero and mid-page as well as at the end, and ask only for the form fields you really need. In Japan, claims must follow rules such as the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations, so words like "guaranteed" or "No. 1" need evidence.

How to create a landing page and what to prepare

The more clearly you define who the page speaks to and what it says before design starts, the fewer rewrites you need. A single landing page typically takes a few weeks to two months:

  • Set the goal: one target action – an inquiry, booking or purchase
  • Define the reader: their role, problems and the alternatives they compare you with
  • Structure and copy: lay out headings following the flow above and write each block
  • Design and build: match your logo and colors and make it easy to read on a phone
  • Tracking: set up GA4 and ad conversion tracking, and test the form end to end
  • Launch and improve: adjust headlines and button text based on the numbers

It helps to have ready: product or service materials, your logo, photos, the questions customers ask most and the ads you plan to run. Cost depends heavily on the page length and whether copywriting is included – see typical landing page costs in Japan for general ranges.

What makes the difference after launch – and common mistakes

A landing page really starts working after launch. When sign-ups stay low, the cause is often one of these:

  • The hero message does not match the ad, so visitors leave right after the click
  • The page was only checked on a computer and is hard to read on a phone
  • Heavy images make the page slow to load
  • Too many features are listed, so the main strength gets lost
  • Conversion tracking is missing, so nobody knows what to fix

Improve one element at a time – a headline, a button label, a form field – and check how the numbers move. Our guide to landing page optimization explains the process step by step.

FAQ

Should I build a landing page or a website first?

If you want to start advertising or grow sign-ups for one main service, starting with a landing page can work well. In industries where trust has to be shown broadly, it is common to build the website first and add landing pages later. We can suggest which suits you at the demo stage.

Is the landing page demo really free?

Yes. Building the demo costs you nothing, and if you decide not to continue after seeing it, there is no charge. If you go ahead, you receive a plan and an estimate based on the demo.

Can we start without finished copy?

Yes. Share your product materials, current website or the questions customers often ask, and we draft the structure and copy from there. Missing photos can be replaced with placeholders while the layout is settled, and you get a list of needed materials later.

How long does it take to create a landing page?

A single landing page can often go live within a few weeks once materials are ready. Writing copy from scratch or adding forms and tracking takes a little longer. Demos are built in order after we review your request, and we reply to messages within two business days.

Does it work if we never meet in person?

Yes. Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English. You give feedback while looking at the actual pages, so there is no need to schedule meetings across time zones.

Can you run ads and improve the page after launch?

Yes. Google Ads, Meta Ads, GA4 setup and landing page improvements all run through the same single contact. Ad and analytics accounts are created and kept in your name.
