Hotel direct booking engine for your website in Japan – win more bookings and pay less in OTA fees

When most of your rooms sell through online travel agencies, every extra booking means a bigger commission, and the guest's contact details stay with the platform. A booking engine built properly into your own website lets you sell the same rooms on better terms and keep the relationship with returning guests. This page covers how to choose a system, how to design the path to a direct booking and what usually goes wrong – and how UNANOBO shows you that path in a free demo before you commit.

  • Free demo – decide after you see it
  • By message, in Japanese or English
  • One person from demo to launch

A phone number or an email address is enough – whichever suits you.

Why a hotel needs its own direct booking engine

OTAs such as Rakuten Travel, Jalan, Booking.com and Expedia bring a lot of guests, and they charge a commission on each stay. Rates depend on the contract, but around ten percent is typical for domestic OTAs and international ones often charge more. A direct booking engine on your website changes three things:

  • Cost per booking: you pay for the booking system, and the cost per reservation is usually much lower than an OTA commission
  • Your own guest relationship: emails and stay history stay with you, so you can invite guests back or suggest an anniversary stay
  • Your story, your way: rooms, meals, the area and the mood of the place – all the things a fixed OTA listing cannot fully show

You can keep your OTAs. A realistic plan lets new guests discover you there, while repeat guests and people who look you up book directly on your site.

Signs your official site is losing bookings

Many hotels already have a booking engine and still see few direct bookings. Check whether any of these apply:

  • The "Book now" button sits low on the home page and is hard to find on a phone
  • Clicking it opens a screen that looks nothing like your site, which feels risky
  • Your site's rate is higher than on OTAs, or there is no perk for booking direct
  • The availability calendar is hard to read and dates reset with every change
  • There is no English or Chinese version, so overseas guests go back to OTAs
  • Nobody can tell which pages or ads actually bring bookings

Even one of these means you can often improve results by fixing the website path, before changing the booking system at all. For rooms, access and the rest of the site, see hotel website design.

Choosing a booking engine: what to compare

There are many booking systems for hotels and ryokan in Japan, with different features and pricing. These points make the comparison easier:

  • Channel manager link: one inventory and rate setup for OTAs and your site, so you avoid double bookings
  • Pricing: a monthly fee or a percentage per booking; check setup costs and minimum terms too
  • Payments: card prepayment, pay at the property, automatic cancellation fees
  • Languages and currencies: English, Chinese and Korean screens, and overseas cards
  • Mobile flow: few steps from dates and guests to payment, with easy input fields
  • Plans: long-stay and early-bird rates, anniversary plans and website-only perks set up in the admin panel
  • Guest data: support for the guest register required under Japan's Inn and Hotel Act
  • Fit with your site: your colors and logo, ideally embedded in your own pages

If you already use a channel manager, only some booking engines may connect to it, so start by checking which ones your current provider supports. For ryokan details such as in-room dining or private baths, see ryokan website design.

Building the path to a direct booking

Once the engine is in place, the next job is to make booking direct feel like the better choice. A typical rollout looks like this:

  • Review: bookings and commissions per OTA, website visits and your best-selling plans
  • A reason to book direct: a best-rate promise, a welcome drink or late checkout – pick one clear perk
  • Button placement: a booking button fixed at the bottom of the phone screen, with links straight from each room and plan page
  • Matching design: the booking screen uses your colors, logo and fonts
  • Google: a complete Google Business Profile and setup so your official rate can appear in Google's hotel results and Maps
  • Tracking: GA4 records completed bookings, so you see which pages and ads bring them

Things to have ready: photos and descriptions for each room type, rates and plans, your cancellation policy, and contract details for your booking system and channel manager. Some OTA contracts include rate conditions, so review them before setting your website prices.

Common mistakes when adding a booking engine

A booking engine alone does not guarantee direct bookings. Check these points before launch:

  • OTA and website inventory are synced by hand, so bookings arrive after the hotel is full
  • The booking screen is never tested on a phone and guests leave at the input step
  • Cancellation terms and payment options appear only at the last step and guests hesitate
  • Confirmation emails land in spam and the front desk gets extra calls
  • Tracking is missing, so nobody can compare direct results with OTAs

For booking features in other industries too, see websites with a booking system. Testing the full booking path on real screens before launch prevents most of these problems.

How UNANOBO works: see the booking path in a free demo

Before you commit, UNANOBO builds a free demo of your official website using your photos and the feel of your property. You can follow the path from a room page to the booking screen and try the fixed booking button on your phone. For the engine itself, we use the service you already have or help you pick one that suits your operation, then handle the integration and tracking setup.

The process: free demo, feedback, launch, growth. The founder handles every project personally, from the first demo to Google Ads and MEO after launch, so you keep one contact. Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English, and ad accounts, the domain and analytics stay in your property's name.

FAQ

What does the free demo include?

A working official website built from your photos, logo and colors, centered on the home page and the room and plan pages. You can see where the booking button sits and how it leads to the booking screen, on a computer and a phone. The demo costs nothing.

What if I decide not to go ahead?

That is fine. If the direction does not suit you, you can stop after the demo with no cost. Feel free to use it as a reference while you compare options.

Can I keep my current booking system and channel manager?

In most cases, yes. We build your current booking engine into the new site and match its look. If switching would clearly help, we explain why, and the choice stays with you.

How long does it take to launch?

Typically one to two months for a smaller property, depending on page count and languages. It moves faster when photos and rate tables are ready, and you can schedule the launch outside your busy season.

What do I need to prepare?

To start the demo, just send your current website address or your OTA listing. For the full build, room photos and descriptions, plans and rates, your cancellation policy and booking system details make things smooth.

Can we work together remotely by message?

Yes. Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English. The demo arrives as a link you can open on any device, and you get a reply within two business days.
