Shopify theme customization service – see your redesigned store before you decide
Your store looks like every other shop on the same theme, product pages cannot show everything you want to say, or the theme settings simply do not offer the layout you need. Shopify theme customization solves this at the depth that fits – from a few new sections to a fully original theme. This page explains the levels of customization, how the work runs and what to prepare, and why UNANOBO starts with a free demo of your redesigned store.
- Free demo – decide after you see it
- By message, in Japanese or English
- One person from demo to launch

Four levels of Shopify customization
Cost and timeline depend on how deep the work goes. The first step is finding the level that actually solves your problem.
- Theme editor settings: colors, fonts, section order, banners and collection layouts – all done in the admin without code
- New sections and blocks: comparison tables, detailed ingredient or size information, brand stories – parts your theme lacks, built in Liquid and placed from the editor
- Custom templates: different product page layouts per product type, dedicated landing page layouts, product-specific details pulled from metafields
- An original theme: a custom Shopify theme designed and built from scratch around your brand
For most stores, a good existing theme plus well-built sections and templates changes both the look and the usability enough. If you are still choosing a base theme, see how to choose a Shopify theme.
Signs your store needs customization
If several of these sound familiar, it is time to go beyond the theme settings.
- Your store is hard to tell apart from other shops on the same theme
- There is no place on product pages for materials, usage, sizing or gift options
- Product images and details are hard to read on a phone, and checkout takes too many taps
- Years of added apps have slowed the store down and made the design inconsistent
- Every campaign or feature page takes a lot of manual work
- A previous developer edited the theme code directly, so you cannot update the theme
App overload is a common one. Replacing a small display app with a native theme section often makes the whole store faster and cleaner. For the bigger picture, see our guide to e-commerce site design.
That is much easier to judge while looking at a demo. Send us your store address to start.
How Shopify themes work today
Current Shopify themes follow the Online Store 2.0 architecture. Pages are built from JSON templates and sections, and any section a developer builds can be added and reordered in the theme editor. Done right, customization leaves you able to keep editing the store yourself.
Theme code is written in Liquid, Shopify's template language. Product-specific information can live in metafields and metaobjects, so you fill in a field in the admin and it appears on the right pages.
- Duplicate first: work on an unpublished copy of the live theme and preview it before publishing
- Track changes: Shopify CLI or the GitHub integration keeps a history, so any issue is easy to roll back
- Theme updates: the more core code is edited, the more manual work moving to a new theme version takes
- Checkout limits: checkout design options are restricted and depend on your Shopify plan
Syncing data with other systems or automating inventory and orders is handled through apps and APIs. See Shopify API integration for that side.

How the work runs and what to prepare
Typically, adding a few sections takes a few weeks, while an original theme takes two to three months or more. The steps look like this:
- Audit: current theme and version, installed apps, and any past code edits
- Priorities: start with the pages closest to sales – product pages, cart, home
- Design: settle the direction on the home and product pages, checked mainly on mobile
- Build and test: develop on the duplicate theme, then test browsers, phones, apps and the full order flow
- Launch and handover: publish the theme and show you how to use the new sections
It helps to have ready: your store URL, original logo and product image files, two or three stores you like and a short list of current pain points. Access is best given through a staff or collaborator account, so no passwords need to be shared, and your store and payment accounts stay in your name.
We build the free demo without touching your store, using your current products.
When an original theme makes sense – and common mistakes
An original Shopify theme suits brands that want full control over every detail, or catalogs that do not fit the patterns of existing themes. It also means a larger budget, a longer timeline and owning the maintenance after launch. Whatever the level, these mistakes come up again and again:
- Editing the live theme directly, so shoppers see half-finished layouts
- Hard-coding the design so nothing can be changed in the theme editor
- Testing only on desktop and missing problems on mobile, where most orders happen
- Leaving code from removed apps in the theme, which keeps the store slow
- Keeping no record of edits, so the next project starts with an investigation
All of these are avoidable with a clear process and a shared picture of the result before work starts – which is what the free demo is for.
How UNANOBO customizes Shopify stores: a free demo first
Before you commit, UNANOBO builds a free demo of your redesigned store using your own products and brand. You click through the new home and product pages on a computer and a phone, and then we decide together whether new sections are enough or an original theme is worth it.
The process is simple: free demo, feedback, launch, growth. The founder handles every project personally, so you keep one contact from the demo to improvements after launch. Everything runs by message, in Japanese or English, and SEO, Google Shopping and Meta Ads after launch go through the same contact.

FAQ
What does the free demo include?
A working redesign of your store, centered on the home and product pages, built with your product photos, logo and colors. You can check it on mobile too, and you decide whether to continue after seeing it.
What if I decide not to go ahead?
That is fine. The demo is free and there is no charge if you stop. Reviewing the demo does not touch your store settings or theme.
Will my store stay open during the work?
Yes. All work happens on an unpublished copy of your theme, so shoppers keep using the live store. When everything is ready we publish the new theme and check pages and the order flow right away.
Can you customize a paid theme from the Theme Store?
Usually, yes. Editing a theme's core code makes future updates from the theme developer a manual job, so we prefer adding sections and templates and keeping changes to the original code to a minimum.
What do I need to prepare?
Your store URL and a few notes on what bothers you are enough to start. Reference stores and original product images make the demo more specific. When the work begins, you get instructions by message on how to create staff access.
Is working remotely by message a problem?
Not for Shopify – every part of the work happens online. You get replies within two business days, and every screen to review is sent as a preview link. Japanese or English, whichever you prefer.
